1000 Loads of Recycled Materials Means Big Savings.

Recycling efforts by CoffsCoast residents has seen the 1000th semi trailer load of processed, recycled materials collected from the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at the Coffs Coast Resource Recovery Facility, over the last two years.

Each load is distributed to different companies throughout Australia for sustainable reuse in products such as pipes, polar fleece, kitty litter, new bottles and cans and a variety of packaging.

Regional Manager for Handybin Waste Services, Mr Lee Beckett, said that on average, each semi trailer load weighs in at 25 tonnes, taking the total of recycled materials dispatched from the facility to 25,000 tonnes since March 2007.

“The recovery of this amount of recycled material means huge benefits to the environment, with each tonne saving 1.15 cubic metres of airspace at the landfill. The carbon emission saving is 12,553 tonnes and is equivalent to permanently removing 3015 cars from the road.” He said.

On hand to witness the 1000th load being collected were representatives from Coffs Harbour City Council, Bellingen Shire Council and Nambucca Shire Council.

General Manager of Coffs Harbour City Council, Mr Stephen Sawtell, said the volume of recovered recyclables also represented substantial savings for the Coffs Coast Community.

“The Coffs Coast Waste Services partnership between Handybin Waste Services and the three Local Government Areas is achieving economic savings for the whole of the CoffsCoast region.”

“Under the current fee structure, each 1.15 cubic metres of air space saved at the landfill represents a dollar value of $110.00, making a total saving to the community of $2.4 million dollars over the two year period.”

“CoffsHarbour, Bellingen and the NambuccaValleyresidents seem to have adopted the three bin system very well and we are pleased that recycling rates for the region continue to increase.” He said.
