Photo Story handout for students

PART ONE: Define, Collect, Decide

1.  Create a folder on your fileshare/jump drive where you can store the materials you find.

2.  Search for image resources for your story, including: pictures, drawings, photographs, maps, charts, etc.Take pictures and/or scan items as needed. -Save these resources in your folder.

3.  Try to locate audio resources such as music, speeches, interviews, and sound effects. -Save these resources in your folder.

4.  Try to find informational content, which might come from web sites, word processed documents, or PowerPoint slides. -Save these resources in your folder.

5.  Begin thinking of the purpose of your story. Who is your audience?

PART TWO: Select, Import, Create

1.  In Photostory, import the images, audio and text you would like to use for your story. These items should all be in the folder you created.

2.  Modify number of images and/or image order, if necessary.

PART THREE: Decide, Write, Record, Finalize

1.  Decide on the purpose and point of view of your digital story.

2.  Write a script that will be used as narration in your digital story AND provides the purpose and point of view you have chosen.

3.  Use a computer microphone and record the narration of your script.

4.  Import the narration into Photo Story. Finalize your digital story by saving it as a Windows Media Video (.wmv) file.

…install Photostory at home
-download it from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx

…import images
-use the wizard.
-Click on the folder where you’ve saved your pictures.
-click on the picture you want to import and select “ok”. Repeat this step until you have added all your pictures. You can arrange the order of your pictures by clicking on the arrows to the right of the timeline on this screen.
-when you have all of your pictures, click on “next”.

…add text
-within the wizard, after you add your images, you will be presented with a screen that allows you to add text to each picture.
-on the timeline, click on the picture you want to add text to.
-type the text in the box. You can change the font and color by clicking on the font button just above the text box.
-repeat this step for each picture you want to add text to.

…add voice narration
-within the wizard, after adding text to pictures, you will be given the opportunity to add voice narration.
-click on the picture you want to add narration to.
-make sure you have a microphone attached. Click the red button to begin recording.
-repeat this step for each picture.

…import background music
-within the wizard, after adding narration, you will be given the opportunity to add music.
-click on the picture where you wish to begin adding music.
-select your music file from the “select music” button. Music files must be mp3, wave, or windows media files.
