Lakewood Project Handbook

Mission Statement

The mission of the Lakewood Project isto expand the musical horizons of the students,to foster a professional attitude toward performance and relationships with other members of the ensemble, and to unsparingly sharewhat they have learned with other school communities.

Philosophy

The Lakewood Project is an extra curricular musical group consisting of students from Lakewood High School in grade 9-12. The Lakewood Project is a rock orchestra, which will rehearse, and perform rock music and classical music with a special twist. Students will learn to improvise, compose and play as an independent ensemble. Every member of the Lakewood Project will be a critical part of this ensemble’s success. Members are to take their membership seriously and give 100% at all times. Members will be expected to attend all rehearsals, sectionals and concerts. Members are also expected to keep up with all class work and homework in their courses at Lakewood High School. The directors will provide assistance to members to help them be successful both musically and academically. Committed, focused and ongoing efforts on the part of each member will assure this success.

Attendance Policy

1.  Members are permitted no more than three excused absences. (More than three may result in a director/parent meeting and/or dismissal from the ensemble.)

2.  Sometimes there are unavoidable family schedule conflicts. If a conflict is going to result in a missed rehearsal, parents must submit a request for absence two weeks prior to absent date in writing.

3.  Illness is considered an excused absence. Parents must call 227-5990 (Ms. Hankins’ Voicemail) before Noon the day of a Sunday rehearsal or 1 hour before any other rehearsals. Even though illness is unavoidable, you are still only permitted three excused absences total.

4.  Unexcused absences will not be tolerated and membership in the group may be terminated as a result.

5.  Everyone is required to stay and tear down equipment. All members are required to stay for an after rehearsal note session and leave rehearsal with a newsletter when one is given for the week.

6.  Attendance at all concerts is mandatory. Write dates on your calendars now!!!! Even the camp concert counts as a required concert!

7.  Attendance at the rehearsals prior to the July 4th concert are crucial to the success of the group, please plan accordingly.

Concert Uniform Policy

Please make sure you have your uniform by TBD

Solid Black Shirt of your choice (no t-shirts or shirts that look like t-shirts)

Electric Instrument and School Equipment Policy

All students who are assigned an electric instrument or school instrument must complete the Lakewood City Schools Instrument Rental Contract. All students must pay the standard school instrument rental fee of $25.00 for the year September to June. Copies of the contract will be given to you with the instrument. Please return the contract to Ms. Hankins by August 31st and submit rental to Mrs. Williams in the bookroom no later than Monday, August 31, 2015.

Please note that the instruments and equipment are worth thousands of dollars, and we want to keep them as long as possible. Lakewood Project equipment is to be used only for Lakewood Project events or outside activities only when approved by the directors.

Rehearsal Policies

1.  Students are required to bring all of their equipment and music to every rehearsal. Students will be sent home to get any missing equipment or music and this will count as a tardy. If you lose your music, it is the member’s responsibility to inform their Section Leader no later than the beginning of rehearsal.

2.  Come to rehearsals prepared to give 100%, practice your music, clean and repair your instruments, know your equipment.

3.  Students must bring pencils to rehearsal.

4.  Come to rehearsals on time.

5.  It is your responsibility to communicate with the Ms. Hankins if you have an attendance issues.

6.  Proper footwear must be worn at all times during rehearsals and concerts.

7.  Non-music readers should bring audio recorders to rehearsal.

8.  Everyone should come to rehearsals to ready participate, even when you are not playing a particular piece. When you are not playing, pay attention to notes given to the group just in case they apply to you, and prepare yourself to be an understudy. Do not be disruptive to the group by roaming around, by visiting with others, or any other behavior that is disruptive to the rehearsal process.

9.  There is to be no eating during the rehearsals. Part of coming prepared to rehearsals is eating before rehearsal starts. Water bottles with caps are permitted. A 10 minutes break halfway through rehearsal can be used for eating or other personal activities. No food or liquids other than water on stage – ever.

10.  The group comes first; some decisions will be made that you may not be happy with. You need to trust that the directors know what they are doing and are putting the group first. All assignments in The Lakewood Project are based on the individual’s strengths.

11.  Be respectful to everyone at all times. We work as a team here. Don’t be the weakest member.

12.  Only play your instrument when asked to play. Do not play anyone else’s instrument or part, even “just for fun”. A director will administer one reprimand. At the second occurrence, the member will be asked to leave rehearsal.

13.  Technical problems that you encounter should be brought to the attention of a member of the technical staff in a respectful manner and as soon as possible; do not wait until rehearsal is over. Follow up this conversation with an email to Trish as soon as you get home.

14.  Everyone should learn how to set up. Be proactive and help!!!

15.  Come here with good attitudes so our rehearsal time can be used effectively.

Concert Policies

1.  Attendance at all concerts is mandatory.

2.  Students should bring all of the equipment, clothes, water and other needs to school on concert days. If you have concerns about the safety of your possessions you need to make prior arrangements with the Civic management for storage and delivery times on the concert days.

3.  Sound check begins immediately at the assigned time. Students should report early so that they are in their assigned spots and ready to start. ARRIVING LATE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

4.  All students are required to help tear down after the concert.

Things you need to provide

As you may know the Lakewood Project and the Lakewood City Schools provides a great deal of equipment for this ensemble. But, there are some things that you need to provide.

1.  All instrumentalists should own and carry a small repair kit specifically for your instrument. (An example of what this kit would include: small screwdrivers, needle nose pliers and extra strings.) Check with the directors if you need help with the specifics for your instrument.

2.  Everyone in the Lakewood Project needs to supply at least one 3-ring black binder with page protectors that will hold your music.

3.  Those performers who do not read music need to own and bring to all rehearsals a small recording device so they have a way to review music at home. (Although it is not required this equipment would be helpful for all members of the Lakewood Project)

4.  All performers who use in-ear monitors should purchase at least one pair of headphones. These are available at all discount stores, the quality and cost ranges greatly. You could spend as little as $5 and as much as $40 the important consideration should be your comfort while performing.

5.  Pencils, pencils and, more pencils. By the way, that’s sharpened pencils with erasers.

6.  We hope to have times when we travel to other venues or perform in less formal settings. You will be given a travel shirt. If we decide to add Lakewood Project garb, you will be required to purchase these additional items.

7.  Participation in fundraisers for the Lakewood High School Orchestra program and orchestra events.

Now you can sign all of your forms. If you have any questions, please call Ms. Hankins at (216) 227-5990 or e-mail us at . We will get back to you as soon as possible.
