Congratulation to all exhibiting members. Well done ! Another success !

It was a terrific achievement as the public were very responsive to the artworks, sales were reasonable and people asked about and took away information about the Society. The Council is very grateful to all who were able to do duty, those who helped pull-down and pack up and all who exhibited from around Australia.
Many thanks to Rikki Fisher in NSW, who does the artwork for the advertising material we send out.
There were some very appreciative comments from the public amongst the Most Popular Choice voting slips. The voting numbers for a wide range of artworks reflected a diverse interest by the voters in the breadth, skill and care in the various media. Alison Clark’s pastel ‘Elusive’ received the most votes. Closely followed by Chris Stubbs ceramic (‘Missing Pieces, Bilby’), Sandra Temple (‘Going Going Gone II’ - depicting mother and young orang-utan), Darren Gilbert’s pen (‘Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo’), Daisy Claridge ( ‘Lynx’), Kate Gorringe-Smith ( lino & woodcut ‘Fossil Memory of the Sky III’), and Jo McCrossin (pencil owl portrait ‘Contemplative Mask’)
The top vote in the Most Popular Choice adds to the artist’s tally towards WASA Artist of the Year.
The public donated $73 for Birdlife Australia.

Would you feel guilty if we told you that some of the artworks at ‘Jewels of the Wild’ had packaging without a name on it. Imagine at the end of an exhibition of 80 artworks, getting all artworks down off the walls - sold ones sorted, checked and wrapped for their purchasers Remaining artworks secured in their own bubble-wrap, all in only 30-45 minutes.
Packing up an exhibition quickly and efficiently isn’t aided by not being able to recognise which wrapping belongs with an artwork. Next time please pick up a felt pen and write your name on all your packaging – even if you use multiple layers of bubble-wrap. Please.
On a less grumpy note I’d like to especially thank Marlene Millard and Sandra Temple for their meticulous presentation – clean glass, wrapping and boxes labelled and they provided return address paperwork.

The Art of Science exhibition Remarkable Natural History illustrations from Museum Victoria

Runs until 3rd November 2013 at Mildura Art Centre

WASA sometimes receives in the post entry forms for art exhibitions. The latest

one to arrive was Rotary Club of Leongatha in Victoria – entries close 20th September and

the exhibition is on during mid-October. The link below will take you to their website.

If you are curious about other WASA members inspiration, their location, their history or work

with wildlife – spend some time reading the Artist Pages on the WASA website.

In this Warble if text is underlined and in a different colour it means if you slide your mouse over it, an action like choosing to click to a website or open an email message will occur. Like this – click here to view the National gallery website. Hold the mouse over the words and voila,

The details come up and if you select Ctrl and Click to follow the link you will go to the NGV website.

Did you know that the National Library of Australia in Canberra stores thousands of paintings as well as books?

If you’re in Canberra, you can visit the Reading Room and request them. Lyn d’Alton of Melbourne spent a few hours earlier this year while in Canberra. enjoying Cooper's 'Parrots of the World', John Gould's massive tomes and more. The staff also showed Lyn some other bird/botanical books they thought she might be interested in.

“I had a good look at how William T Cooper did all his bird paintings: eye highlights, claws etc. Very interesting ! All of Cooper's paintings for "Parrots of the World' are stored by NLA and can be viewed.”

The National Library of Australia hosts TROVE. You can find the location of any book, map, journal, lists, pictures, photos, objects and more held by any library in Australia, by going to the website. http://trove.nla.gov.au/

ON LINE EXHIBITION ; SHOULD WE OR SHOULD WE NOT ?

WASA now has the ability on our website to stage an online art exhibition. We believe this makes it easier for those who don’t live in Victoria to exhibit with the Society. We have sold artworks recently to people who only saw an image online of the artwork. The ideas we have so far are :

a) That the information to be posted online with the jpeg image needs to be artwork title, media and support, unframed dimensions and price.

b) WASA can forward sales enquiries to you. The sale arrangements, confirmation and despatch of artwork is your responsibility. No commission would be charged.

c) If you have listed an artwork which you later decide to display elsewhere, let us know and we’ll remove it from the online exhibition.

d) The artwork should be unframed. If it usually would have a frame and it is sold via the WASA website, do send it to the purchaser so that it is both presentable and will travel without damage.

Below are the other points we need to consider and the WASA council wants to know your responses.

1. Should it be judged and part of the Artist of the Year tally ? WASA would need to pay a judge

2. We could engage the public by inviting votes and have a Viewers Choice winner.: On the website page we can accept comments which can be checked / vetted before appearing on the website. This engagement with the public is another step towards promoting the Society, our exhibitions and you – the artists.

3. What format should the images appear in? The two options are to have individual images like the existing slideshows or place the images in a PDF like the images of the 2012 Wild Awards. For the person doing the work it is much easier and faster for the images to be placed in a PDF document.

4. Charge : WASA will charge an entry fee per artwork. Would you exhibit if the charge was $5 or $10?

5. How long should it be online ? The online exhibition can be organised once a year initially. How many months should we leave it on the website ?

6. Management : Is any member able to assist ? Some knowledge of, or desire to learn about using a WordPress template is necessary and some skill with resizing images is bound to be needed.

Please tell us your opinions for these key questions

Please email your responses ( address ….? )

1. Judged ?

2. Public Viewers Choice ?

3. Format ?

4. How much would you be prepared to pay per artwork ?

5. How long should they stay online 3 months or 6 months ?

6. Most importantly, can you and would you help?

Always remember to ask that important question.

Kelvin’s Komments
For the Society the next big challenge is the exhibition in October to be held at the Vic Arts Society galleries in East Melbourne. A fine gallery with a long history of making significant contributions to Victorian art, albeit to the nation. Our own history indicates that for many years the Society held their annual exhibition at the same location. At that time the Society commanded the entire gallery to accommodate the exhibition.
This year we have been involved in two exhibitions. One at the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show in which we participated with several other societies
Contd…next column / Kelvin’s Komments Kontinued
based in Melbourne. The second which concluded only recently, was held in Gasworks gallery in Albert Park.
In both the above exhibitions WASA’s work was of a high standard and it was gratifying that our members responded to the challenge in the number of members contributing. Gasworks in particular was exciting in the number of members who exhibited, not only from Victoria but interstate.
The ‘Wildlife Now’ VicArts exhibition in October presents many challenges to our members. It is my hope that our membership responds and we receive many entries. It is a fine gallery and it deserves our participation.
Another challenge at ‘Wildlife Now’ is to provide adequate supervision for the duration of the exhibition. I ask our membership to respond to our need to perform roster duties that can be shared equitably among all our members. It is important that visitors to the gallery are able to see and meet WASA members, and are made welcome by WASA. We can answer questions regarding the exhibition, WASA and often viewers like to chat about the wildlife also.
Details of the roster requirements will be available shortly. Please see if you are able to assist.
Cheers – Kelvin Mather
