Course Description:

Sixth grade students will read, be challenged with, and exposed to a variety of literature. Students will work toward mastering previously learned skills. Students will read novels, short stories, and other varied selections and work hard to improve their critical thinking skills through various reading activities. Students will also select and use different forms of writing for specific purposes, using varied sentence structure and literary devices in their writing. Students will edit their writing based on their knowledge of grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and other conventions of written language in order to produce final pieces of written compositions. Classroom participation is required.

Materials Required:

Backpack, folder, composition book, notebook paper, No. 2 pencils, red/blue/black pen, highlighter, USB drive

Library book and AR folder w/ reading log

Supplies need to be replaced or replenished throughout the year. Please take care of this as needed.

Students are required to bring all materials and supplies to class each day.

Textbooks must be covered at all times throughout the school year. Please respect school property.

Tutoring Days/Times:

Monday - Thursday 3:30 – 4:00 Tutoring is as needed or by teacher request. Make prior arrangements to attend.

Homework Policy/ Late Work Policy:

·  Students may be assigned homework, projects, or daily work to complete at home on a per day basis.

·  No late work will be accepted unless the student has an excused absence; approved note was turned in to the office.

·  It is the responsibility of the student to ask for any missed assignments.

Grading Policy:

·  The student’s grade will be based on 40% Homework and 60% Tests.

·  If a project is not turned in on the assigned date, the grade recorded will be a “0”.

·  Cheating is NOT tolerated. Plagiarism is considered cheating. Sharing answers of any kind will NOT be tolerated. ALL students involved will receive a ZERO for the assignment, an “N” in conduct, and a referral to the office.

Each six weeks will consist of but not limited to:

Accelerated Reader reading and quizzes Computer lab/ laptop assignments

Literature textbook selections; class novels Comprehension/Vocabulary/ STAAR ~ practice, lessons, quizzes, tests

Class Rules/Expectations:

·  Be Prompt – 2 tardies = warning; 3rd tardy = detention

·  Be Prepared – Have ALL your supplies each day

·  Listen Carefully – It is important to listen to the information, instructions, and directions

·  Follow Directions – Oral and Written

·  Work Quietly - Do not disturb others in our learning environment

·  Respect Others – Be kind with your words and actions
