“It’s a strange feeling to be loved by so many rock ‘n roll bands and their fans,” Legends Hall of Fame producer, Robert Metzgar commented after the recent PRO MUSIC AWARDS ceremony. At age 53, the lead singer in the Smokey River Boys has become a heroic symbol and ICON to thousands of rock bands, rock musicians and fans across the world who have read Metzgar’s best selling book entitled, “The Artist Survival Manual.”

Metzgar has probably helped, auditioned and worked to promote more rock bands, singer/songwriters and musicians than any other label executive in Nashville over the past few years. Literally thousands of rock bands have his comments on their web sites and his audition reviews from the countless hours he donates to the industry at seminars and conferences. When he walks into a room full of rock bands and musicians, Metzgar is treated like a superstar. Often some of the people who come to shake his hand and thank him for his help have tears in their eyes. Let’s face it, kids love the man who loves them.

It all goes back to his huge heart for music in all genres. “I never turn down a phone call, or an email or anyone that I feel like I can help and get a door opened for in this business. After all, the business has become so difficult today to break into.” There are scores of bands that will testify to Metzgar’s incredible endurance at auditions that sometimes last until 4:00 a.m. in the morning. Metzgar stays until he sees that last band, until he signs the last autograph, until the last person gets help. When the other judges are putting in their ear plugs, Metzgar is asking the sound man to “turn it up louder!”

“I had open heart surgery in the year 2003. I had five heart bypasses and within a period of about 18 months had kidney surgery, colon surgery and open heart surgery, “ Metzgar says. During that long time that I was out of work recuperating from the operations, I realized that there are so many people out there who need direction, need help and need guidance, that I started to accept various dates to audition and help talent. Thousands of rock bands and musicians have met Mr. Metzgar on the Fashion Rock Now tour. Others have found him as a judge for the American Music Auditions or the Nashville Producer’s Auditions held around the world.

No matter the city, no matter the lateness of the hour, there are thousands of bands, singer/songwriters and artists that will tell you that Metzgar belongs in the Legends Hall of Fame because of his love for the music, and the musicians in the music industry. Here’s a man who left Texas as a young man with $400.00 and a 1943 Jeep and decided to come to Nashville and get involved in music. Little did he know that the future would put him in the Producer’s Hall of Fame and last year into the Legends Hall Of Fame.

During the recent taping by MTV of their series entitled, “True Spin” which is shot for television in Metzgar’s Nashville office location, one of the young people who was working as a camera technician stopped and asked Mr. Metzgar for his autograph. “He is someone that you idolize in this business,” Jack Sommerset said after the taping. There is no one in the world like Mr. Metzgar. He treats us all like we are his family.

Metzgar’s roots are amazing. He worked for the King of Rock ‘N Roll in 1972. Metzgar was one of the fortunate ones to have worked and been a part of the great Elvis Presley empire and recording career.

The Elvis Presley memorabilia in his office has been the subject of many television clips and his personal gift from Mae Axton who wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis is a centerpiece in the wall of fame that you see when you sit down with him in Nashville.

Metzgar followed those years of promotion by working with the famed producer, Bob Johnson who was President of CBS for 9 years and produced all the Bob Dylan albums. In addition to Dylan career, he worked on the Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Billy Joel careers as well.

Metzgar has one daughter, Michelle Metzgar who is A & R Director for his record label, Platinum Plus Universal Records in Nashville. She has said of her father, “Dad is as comfortable as an old blanket. People take him and just wrap themselves up in his warmth, love and courage for the music.” Nominated as Producer Of The Year by several trade magazines every year he has been in business, the Legends Hall Of Fame producer was chosen as a member of Who’s Who in Music in the year of 2003. “I’m just glad that I lived through all the surgeries and I can still be available to help young people move forward with their careers in this business,” Metzgar said.
