RESEARCH PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
Prospective research proposals should fall within the broad research themes of the Tswalu Foundation. The research themes can be viewed on www.tswalufoundation.org
Guidelines for the development of a research proposal on Tswalu Kalahari Reserve:
1. Title
A title which clearly describes the project to be undertaken.
2. Researcher (s)
Provide a C.V. for the principle researcher. Provide names, designation and associated institutions of all collaborators.
3. Purpose of Research
State the purpose of the research i.e. degree purposes, ecological report, or broader provincial or national concern.
4. Summary
Provide a concise summary (250 words maximum) of the proposal.
5. Statement of research objectives
A paragraph clearly stating and describing the research objectives
6. Background to the research objectives
Give background to the research objectives and provide a clear justification of the need for the research.
7. Literature review
An adequate literature review is required in all research proposals. Include a list of the literature cited in the research proposal.
8. Importance of Tswalu to the project
Clarify why Tswalu is a suitable and necessary site for the research to be undertaken.
9. Research design and methodology
Define your research methodology. This should include: field methodology, handling of samples, samples required, hours of research activity and proposed time-frames. Indicate whether ethics approval is required, and whether provincial government collection and transport permits are necessary to undertake the project.
10. Significance of the research
Indicate the significance of the research to the broader scientific community. Why is the research important? What contribution does the research make to our understanding of the species, group of species and/or the system? What is the benefit to Tswalu Kalahari Reserve and/or conservation?
11. Expected outcomes, results and contributions of the research
What are the expected outcomes of the project, in terms of the degree acquired, reports and/or peer review papers? This should include popular articles.
12. Planning and time parameters
Provide an accurate and comprehensive indication of time frame for the research, clear milestones, and an expected completion date.
13. Equipment, materials, infrastructure, logistics and staff
Is there any specific equipment, materials and/or supplies that will be required during the research on Tswalu? This should also include logistical support such as flights, vehicle and on-site assistance. The names, number and requirement of active researchers involved on the project must be provided.
14. Budget
State whether funding is required to conduct this project on Tswalu Kalahari Reserve. Provide a clear, comprehensive, itemized budget should funding be required. This should be an accurate reflection of running costs, including fuel, flights, accommodation, food, and equipment. Preference will be given to projects with full or partial funding in place.
