Guide to Overseas Students on Submission of Various Documents at the Immigration Office

▢ Alien Registration

○ Qualification

A foreigner who plans to stay in Korea for more than 90 days from the day of his/her entry

to the country

○ Required Documents

1. Original Passport

2. Copy of the first page of the passport

3. Transaction fee of 10 000 won

4. Integrated Application form

5. One piece of color picture (3.5*4.5 with white background)

6. Certificate of School Attendance

7. Official Admission Letter from the university

8. Receipt of Payment of Tuition Fee

※ In accordance with the existing Article 73 Paragraph 1, the issuance (re-issuance) of Alien Registration Card receipt has been changed to cash receipt method starting from 2011.1.1

※ Photo: one piece of picture taken within the last 6 months

(3.5cm*4.5cm with white background), one piece of full-face color picture

▢ Report on the change in registration

○ Matters involved

Name, Gender, Date of Birth, Nationality, Affiliated Organization, Change of Organization

(Must be filed within 14 days after the change has been made)

○ Required Documents

1. Passport

2. Alien Registration Card

3. Integrated Application Form ( Form No. 34)

4. In case of changing school:

• Certificate of Attendance from your current university

(including the Official AdmissionLetter, Receipt of Payment of Registration)

• Dismissal Certificate from your previous university

• Academic Transcript

※ Chinese nationals must submit a Certificate of Attendance with the attendance rate

indicated on it

▢ Report on the change of place of sojourn

○ When a registered foreigner decides to change the place of his/her sojourn, he/she must report

the change of address to the local immigration office or city/gun/office of his/her new

residence within 14 days from the day of moving.

○ Required Documents

▢ Reentry Permit

○ D-2 visa holders who have stayed in the country for about a year are exempted from filing

for this permit (Under the Revised 2010.12.1 Law)

※ In case where the remaining sojourn period is less than one year, an exemption is limited in scope

▢ Extension of Sojourn Period

▶ Overseas University Student visa (D-2 visa)

○ Required Documents

1. Original Passport

2. Alien Registration Card

3. Transaction fee of 30 000 won

4. Application Form

5. Certificate of Attendance

6. Academic Transcript

7. Receipt of Payment of Registration

8. Certificate as Beneficiary of Scholarship

▶ Overseas Students (D-2) who are preparing for their masters thesis/dissertation

○ Qualifcation

who obtain their Master's/Doctor's degree but have to remain in the country due to

unavoidable matters such as thesis preparations and others.

○ Required Documents

1. Original Passport

2. Alien Registration Card

3. Transaction fee of 30 000 won

4. Application Form

5. Recommendation Letter of the Adviser (stating the process of thesis guidance,

evaluation schedule, and other related matters)

※A Certificate of Completion (or a document of the schedule of completion) is needed for Chinese nationals

▢ Change of Sojourn Status

▶ Change to Overseas Student visa (D-2)

○ Required Documents

1. Original Passport

2. Alien Registration Card

3. Transaction Fee of 60 000 won (which includes the reentry fee)

4. Integrated Application Form

5. An official acceptance letter indicating an evaluated mathematics ability and financial skills

6. Receipt of payment for registration

7. Documents/Proofs indicating your sojourn expenses such as a copy of statement of bank

account and others

8. Certificate as Beneficiary of Scholarship

9. Certificate of Attendance indicating the attendance rate

10. Academic Transcript

▶ Change to Language Training visa to Overseas Undergraduate/Graduate Student visa

(D-4-1 visa to D-2 visa)

11. Certificate of highest level of education

12. Original copy of the family registration system for Chinese nationals

※ Based on Article 24 of the Immigration Law on Overseas student visa (D-2), if one wishes to change

his/her status from non-overseas student to overseas student, he/she must obtain a prior approval from the university and register before the semester opens. (Take precaution on this as many commit violation of this law every year)

Looking for Employment after Graduation (D-2 visa to D-10 visa)

(Based on Revised 11.6.1 Law)

○ Subject Matter

Those who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from any educational institution or those

who completed their research work at any academic research institute and plan to stay in Korea for training and employment.

○ Required Documents

1. Certificate of Graduation

2. Academic Transcript

3. Diploma

4. Seeking for employment plan (in a format style form )

5. Original Passport

6. Alien Registration Card

7. Transaction fee of 60 000won (re-issuance of registration is needed)

8. Application form

※Those who obtained at least a bachelor's degree from any university in Korea (or those who are expected to graduate) with a Grade Point Average (GPA) below 3.0 need a recommendation letter from their adviser or university chancellor/president.

○ Period: Within 6 months starting from the day when the change in sojourn status is approved

▶ Change to Special Work visa (E-7)

(Based on Revised 11. 6 .1 Law)

○ Required Documents

1. Original Passport

2. Alien Registration Card

3. Transaction fee of 60 000 won

4. Application form

5. Certificate of Graduation

6. Diploma

7. Academic Transcript

8. Original copy and a photocopy of employment contract

9. Employment Recommendation of the ministry and office concerned ( a very important requirement)

10. Seeking for Employment plan (in a format style form)

11. Copy of Business License of the employer

※ Criteria for Change of Sojourn Status

- For those who obtain bachelor's degree in Humanities

The change of visa status is possible if the field of expertise is related to Special Work visa (E-7 visa)

* The limitation to a 12- month employment period is abolished

* The kind of work engaged must be related to the field of specialization and this must be

emphasized when applying for an E-7 visa.

※ The applicant must report the signing of contract between him/her and the employer to the

Immigration office before assuming duties. In this manner, a change in the original visa status

is possible.

▢ Engaging in activities beyond the scope of the original visa

▶ Permission to Overseas student (D-2) to work part-time

○ Qualification

-Those who possess Overseas Student visa (D-2) and are currently attending the university

- Those who receive a recommendation letter from their adviser or instructor; or a recommendation

letter from a language instructor in the case of language trainees

- Those who possess Language Trainee visa (D-4-1) and have been registered and enrolled at

a language institute for more than 6 months

- Those who have completed the regular Master's/Doctor's courses and are on the process of writing

their thesis/dissertation

○ Prescribed number of working hours

- No more than 20 hours during the semester (only from Mondays to Fridays)

* For those who are candidates for Master's/Doctor's degree and are in the process of writing

their thesis, they are allowed to work not more than 30 hours per week (Based on Revised

10.7.26 Law)

- Can work in not more than two places

- There is no limit on working hours and working days during vacation except weekends and

holidays)

4. Recommendation letter for part-time work from the employer, university adviser, and

person in charge at the university

▶Students who have Overseas Student visa (D-2 visa) or Language Training (D-4-1 visa),

but want to work part-time by teaching English language ( a job titleintended merely for E-7 visa holders)

○ Qualification

- Those who receive a recommendation letter from their adviser

- Those who possess an Overseas Student visa (D-2 visa) and are currently attending the university or

any other higher educational institution in the country

※ Those who obtained their bachelor's degree in the country or those who are pursuing their

Master‘s/Doctor's degree at any university in the country and are in the process of writing their

research/thesis/dissertation need to submit a Certificate of police records and Certificate of

physical examination for employment purposes (based on Revised 11.4.25 Law)

○ Required Documents

1. Original Passport

2. Alien Registration Card

3. Integrated Application form (Form # 34)

4. Recommendation letter for part-time work from the adviser (format version)

5. Original copy and a photocopy of the employment contract

6 .Copy of Business license of the employer

※In case of working for academy:

7. Copy of the registered business license of the academy

8. Copy of the registered education facilities of the academy

9. Verification of Educational documents

※ Only documents such as diplomas, certificate for acquisition of any educational degree, and

others stamped with Apostio by the government of your country, confirmed by the Korean

embassy and by the university are only accepted (Based on 2010. 09. 01 Law).

10. Physical Examination for employment purposes (The Ministry of Justice designates certain

medical hospitals/clinics which use a standardized format file for physical examinations and

HIV and drug tests such as marijuana, cocaine, opium, hemp, and methamphetamine).

※You can visit hikorea.go.kr or the Immigration homepage for the government-designated

hospitals/clinics starting 2011.4.1.

11. Certificate of police records issued within 6 months from the day of registration

(must have theofficial notarized stamp of the Korean embassy in your country)

※ Only certificate of police records issued by your country with the official notarized

stamp of the Korean embassy/consulate in your country will be accepted

starting2011.1.1.

<Types of Sojourn Permit and their Corresponding Transaction Fee>
