Case Projects

Case Study 1

1. Based on the information presented in the case study, the fact that London, Hong Kong, and Boston all have different password policy requirements would influence the logical design of Dover’s Active Directory structure. In cases where different password policies are required, a multiple-domain logical structure is necessary. The fact that the new San Francisco office will become the responsibility of the IT staff in Boston is also a factor that could influence the logical design. Objects such as user, group, and computer accounts created for San Francisco users would most likely be defined within same domain as objects relating to Boston.

2. Although different possibilities exist, the most logical domain structure for this case would involve the creation of a single Active Directory tree, that includes dedicated subdomains for the London and Hong Kong offices.

3. The forest root domain would likely be given the name Dovercorp.net, while the subdomains would be named Asia.Dovercorp.net and Europe.Dovercorp.net. This child domain names are general enough to accommodate future expansion in each region.

4. Once the San Francisco office opens, 4 sites would be required, one for each geographic location. Because the San Francisco office will connect to both Hong Kong and Boston, a total of 4 site links would also be required.

5. Once the San Francisco office opens, a total of 4 global catalog servers should be implemented on the network. Microsoft recommends that one global catalog server should be implemented at each Active Directory site in order to ensure adequate performance.

Case Study 2

1. Because the Web server will only be used to run IIS 6.0, Windows Server 2003, Web Edition would be the best choice.

2. Because the file and print server needs to support 8 GB of RAM, Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition would be the best choice.

3. Because the database server needs to support a 2-way cluster, Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition would be the best choice.
