Common Core Activity using Tables

Objectives:

  1. Learn how to insert and format Tables in cooperative groups
  2. Research Halloween traditions in at least three other countries
  3. Cite Sources

Directions:

Learn – In your groups (10 minutes)

  1. Using Word’s Help feature, Microsoft Office On-line, Google, or Youtube, research how to insert and format Tables in a Word Document.

Prepare – In your groups (80 minutes)

  1. In Word,
  2. In the first line, key “Formatting Tables in Word”
  3. Format this to be Title style.
  4. Press Enter
  5. Change the style to No Spacing
  6. Key the definition of a table
  7. Press enter

FOR STEPS G-O LABEL EACH LIST THAT YOU CREATE WITH AN APPROPRIATE HEADING. – INCLUDE ALL LISTS IN THE SAME WORD DOCUMENT THAT YOU JUST CREATED IN STEPS A-F.

  1. Create a list of steps for creating Tables.
  2. Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
  3. Create a list of steps for formatting borders and shading on the tables.
  4. Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
  5. Create a list of steps for formatting Table Styles
  6. Include a screen shot of the Table Styles gallery
  7. Create a list of steps for changing row height and column widths.
  8. Use screen shots or use your snipping tool to include a graphic of the Table Properties dialog box to illustrate where you can set specific row height and column widths.
  9. Explain how to select a row, a column, or an entire table.
  10. Create a list of steps for sorting data in ascending or descending order in a table.
  11. Explain ascending and descending order
  12. Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
  13. Create a list of steps for merging and splitting cells
  14. Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
  15. Create a list of steps to add rows & columns
  16. Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the Ribbon buttons required.
  17. Create a list of steps to delete rows & columns.
  18. Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the Ribbon buttons required.
  19. Crop out any unnecessary parts of the screen shots.
  20. Resize all screen shots and snips to appropriate sizes (not too large or too small) with Square Text Wrapping.
  21. Space the lists and graphics as necessary to be easy to read and follow.
  1. Save the document as Table_Instructions in your Chapter 7 folder.
  2. Print the list of steps for each member of your group or take pictures of them using your phones so that they are handy.

You will use these instructions on a variety of table activities, including the remainder of this project.

Apply – Individual Product (60 minutes)

  1. Research the Halloween traditions in at least two other countries.
  2. Find an Article (Not Wikipedia) that explains the different traditions that are similar to our Halloween in at least two other countries.
  3. In a New Word Document key a brief summary of each country’s Halloween related traditions.
  4. Key in the Country’s name
  5. Format the name to Heading 1 style, change the font and color as you choose.
  6. Press enter and change style to No Spacing
  7. Begin keying the summary on the next line.
  8. press enter and format the next country in the same manner as a-d above.
  9. Save the Document as Halloween_Table in your Word Ch 7 folder
  1. Insert a table below the summaries that looks like this:

  1. Format the font in the 1st and 4th row to be a 14 pt. Sans Serif font.
  2. Format the font of the remaining rows to be 12 pt. Serif font.
  3. Bold the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th rows.
  4. Format shading of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th rows.
  5. Insert a row above row one.
  6. Merge the cells and key “Halloween Traditions:

  1. Format the new first Row to 16 pt. text.
  2. Format borders to something other than the default borders
  3. Insert a row at the bottom of the table and cite your web source.
  4. "Web Page Title." Name of website. Copyright Company, n.d. Web. Date [in format of 24 Feb. 2009].
  5. Place a footer in the document with your path and file name.
  6. Update the footer if necessary.
  7. Save the document again.
  8. Print Preview the document and.

BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS AND/OR PRESENT YOUR FINDINGS ON HOW TO FORMAT TABLES TO THE CLASS.
