Common Core Activity using Tables
Objectives:
- Learn how to insert and format Tables in cooperative groups
- Research Halloween traditions in at least three other countries
- Cite Sources
Directions:
Learn – In your groups (10 minutes)
- Using Word’s Help feature, Microsoft Office On-line, Google, or Youtube, research how to insert and format Tables in a Word Document.
Prepare – In your groups (80 minutes)
- In Word,
- In the first line, key “Formatting Tables in Word”
- Format this to be Title style.
- Press Enter
- Change the style to No Spacing
- Key the definition of a table
- Press enter
FOR STEPS G-O LABEL EACH LIST THAT YOU CREATE WITH AN APPROPRIATE HEADING. – INCLUDE ALL LISTS IN THE SAME WORD DOCUMENT THAT YOU JUST CREATED IN STEPS A-F.
- Create a list of steps for creating Tables.
- Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
- Create a list of steps for formatting borders and shading on the tables.
- Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
- Create a list of steps for formatting Table Styles
- Include a screen shot of the Table Styles gallery
- Create a list of steps for changing row height and column widths.
- Use screen shots or use your snipping tool to include a graphic of the Table Properties dialog box to illustrate where you can set specific row height and column widths.
- Explain how to select a row, a column, or an entire table.
- Create a list of steps for sorting data in ascending or descending order in a table.
- Explain ascending and descending order
- Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
- Create a list of steps for merging and splitting cells
- Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the screen elements required.
- Create a list of steps to add rows & columns
- Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the Ribbon buttons required.
- Create a list of steps to delete rows & columns.
- Include a screen shot or use your snipping tool to capture a picture of the Ribbon buttons required.
- Crop out any unnecessary parts of the screen shots.
- Resize all screen shots and snips to appropriate sizes (not too large or too small) with Square Text Wrapping.
- Space the lists and graphics as necessary to be easy to read and follow.
- Save the document as Table_Instructions in your Chapter 7 folder.
- Print the list of steps for each member of your group or take pictures of them using your phones so that they are handy.
You will use these instructions on a variety of table activities, including the remainder of this project.
Apply – Individual Product (60 minutes)
- Research the Halloween traditions in at least two other countries.
- Find an Article (Not Wikipedia) that explains the different traditions that are similar to our Halloween in at least two other countries.
- In a New Word Document key a brief summary of each country’s Halloween related traditions.
- Key in the Country’s name
- Format the name to Heading 1 style, change the font and color as you choose.
- Press enter and change style to No Spacing
- Begin keying the summary on the next line.
- press enter and format the next country in the same manner as a-d above.
- Save the Document as Halloween_Table in your Word Ch 7 folder
- Insert a table below the summaries that looks like this:

- Format the font in the 1st and 4th row to be a 14 pt. Sans Serif font.
- Format the font of the remaining rows to be 12 pt. Serif font.
- Bold the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th rows.
- Format shading of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th rows.
- Insert a row above row one.
- Merge the cells and key “Halloween Traditions:

- Format the new first Row to 16 pt. text.
- Format borders to something other than the default borders
- Insert a row at the bottom of the table and cite your web source.
- "Web Page Title." Name of website. Copyright Company, n.d. Web. Date [in format of 24 Feb. 2009].
- Place a footer in the document with your path and file name.
- Update the footer if necessary.
- Save the document again.
- Print Preview the document and.
BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS AND/OR PRESENT YOUR FINDINGS ON HOW TO FORMAT TABLES TO THE CLASS.
