Guidance for SETAC Group Users

One of the primary elements of the Your Membership (YM) platform used by SETAC is the Group. Each group in YM has a defined membership and certain other characteristics that uniquely specify its identity within the system. This guidance presents the types of groups available on the SETAC website and a “How to” section for group users.

Types of Groups

SETAC has established two major types of groups – open, where membership is unrestricted, i.e. anyone can belong or join, and closed – where membership is limited by delegation or election. The former typifies groups, like the various Interest Groups, where broad and unrestricted membership is desired to allow large numbers of participants with common interests to interact around a common set of topics. The latter type applies generally to elected groups, like governance boards/councils, committees, and workshop steering groups. In both cases, some kinds of additions or modifications of the contents of the various pages can be done by any group member and other kinds only by a designated group administrator/moderator.

Group Page How to

The primary functions to be familiar with are: joining and leaving a group, accessing a group page, emailing a group, forums, and blogs.

Join or leave a group:

Make sure you are signed in to your SETAC account, find a group under the “get involved page”, click "Join Group” near the top of the group page. One can only join unrestricted groups at will.

Access a group page:

To access the group, make sure you are signed in to your SETAC account, click on "groups" in the grey box on the right titled "my profile", then find the group.

Email the entire group:

To email the entire group from within the IG group page, go to “Options”: select “email all members”. Attachment cannot be sent in the group email function. However, one can under “forum” or “blog” functions, which has the advantage of keeping a permanent record on group page.

You can also email the entire group from your email software using the list serve address.

After emailing the group, if you get bounce back, and feel inclined to help, please notify the office so records can be updated.
