Guidance for selection of Year 1 modules (Department of Greek and Latin):

This year, UCL will be asking new students to register their module choices prior to arrivalon the online system ‘Portico’. Below is some guidance on making your selections – do bear in mind that all selections will be double-checked and approved and changes can be made once you have arrived, but it is very useful to have done as much of the process as possible in advance. Details of individual modules within the Department of Greek and Latin (and modules available for our students in the Department of History and the Institute of Archaeology) can be found in the Course Cataloguefor the coming academic year (‘Courses available in 2015-16’ Information on modules from other departments will be available on the relevant Departmental website (but note that you will often need to check with the relevant Department whether you are permitted to take their modules).

  • All full-time undergraduates are required to take 4 newunits every year – some modules constitute 1 unit, some 0.5.
  • All compulsory modules will automatically be added to your selection.
  • Only some modules are suitable for Year 1 students. In the Department of Greek and Latin, modules in translation for Year 1 students begin CLAS1*** (i.e. you may not select modules listed for Second- and Final-Year students).
  • The selection of your modules in Greek and Latinlanguage will depend on your qualifications and experience, rather than the fact that you are in Year 1 (i.e. those with A Levels in Greek or Latin will take higher level modules than beginners)
  • If you have an A Level (or equivalent) in Greek and/or Latin, you should select ‘Texts 1’ modules (GREK2006 and/or LATN2008)
  • If you have a GCSE (or equivalent)in Greek and/or Latin, you should select ‘Intermediate’ modules (GREK2001 and GREK2002 and/or LATN2003 and LATN2004)
  • If you have no (or only a very little) experience of either Greek or Latin, you should select ‘Beginners’ modules (GREK1001 and GREK1002 and/or LATN1003 and LATN1004)
  • If you are uncertain of your level, select the module that seem closest to your level, and you can check and, if necessary, change your selection after discussion with your Personal Tutor in Induction Week.
