Key skills and experience

Ross has over 40 years experience in underground construction. He started his career as a miner in Broken Hill and moved on to civil tunneling works both in Australia and Malaysia with Transfield Tunnelling. Between 1996 to 1999 he was an Inspector for SMEC Australia on the Elgas LPG Cavern construction.

In 1999 he took on the role of Blasting Subcontractor for the Northside Storage Tunnel in Sydney before traveling overseas to Zambia in 2000 to assist in the training of labour on the Kitwe Copper Mine.

From 2001 to 2002 Ross was the Assistant Construction Superintendant on the Grasstrees Shaft construction in northern Queensland, and between 2002 and 2004 he was the Nightshft Supervisor for Walter Construction on the TransGrid Cable Tunnel in Sydney.

He joined GFWA in 2004 and was responsible for the PCF excavation works at Kemblar Grange, and a number of permeation grouting projects. In 2005 he was responsible for the installation of over 900 GRP bolts and 200 sheets of mesh in the TransGrid Cable Tunnel.

Tunnelling SupervisorResponsible for installation of over 900 GRP bolts and 200 sheets of stainless steel with strict environmental controls in TransGrid cable tunnel.

Grouting SupervisorResponsible for the supervision of microfine permeation grouting behind sheetpiles to provide stability and stop water ingress around service protrusions in Kensington, Sydney. Responsible for the foundation grouting of Shannon Creek Storage Facility.

ShotfirerResponsible for the excavation of a deep trench in basalt using PCF non-explosive rock breaking technology. Trench was excavated in close proximity to the erection of pre-cast concrete walls of factory unit.

Nightshift Supervisor Responsible for supervision of operations for the construction of shafts, tunnel and buildings for TransGrid Cable Tunnel, including 550m of 4mx4m tunnel constructed by roadheader, and 3km section 3.5m dia. constructed by TBM.

SuperintendantResponsible for site supervision, safety and construction of head frame and steel work associated with commencement of shaft sinking operations and installation of shaft sinking equipment. Other work included construction of winder building, installation of winder and associated works.

General Mine Foreman Responsible for the supervision of operations for development and mining crews, training and production, implementing improved work methods and upgrading of equipment and standards required making the operations profitable and viable for the longevity of Kitwe mine, Nkana Central Shaft, Zambia

1999 To 2000

Blasting Subcontractor.Responsible for shaft sinking at Lane Cove and Scotts Creek Northside Storage Tunnel. Duties included transportation of explosives from ORICA magazine at Prospect, charging and turning of round in accordance with approved blasting pattern, inspection and making safe post blasting. Blasting techniques included packaged Powergel with Develedet detonators. Specialist expertise included liaison with Blast Consultant on blast design to maximise production but maintain blast within strict environmental limits in urban setting.

1996 To 1999

SMEC Australia Pty Ltd

InspectorResponsible for site supervision of all technical aspects of the construction of a storage facility for LPG at Port Botany. The project includes construction of two shafts, a series of tunnels above the caverns with water injection boreholes, and four caverns 230m long and 14m by 11m in cross section 165m below surface in Hawkesbury sandstone. The top 30m of each shaft are constructed in diaphragm wall through the overlaying sea dredged sand and botany beds.

Duties included:

- Shaft sinking

- Shaft fit out – steel work – loading section

- Excavation of tunnels and storage caverns using drill and blast methods, mucking operations using LHD loaders and Trucks.

- Blasting and Monitoring

- Ground Support – rockbolting – grouting – shotcreting

- Close work liaison with main contractor and sub contractors and technical personnel.

1995 To 1996

Transfield Tunnelling

Project SuperintendentDrill and blast excavation of Adelaide To Crafters Highway Pilot Tunnel 2.6 meters, 450 meters long. Responsibilities were for the day and afternoon shifts on the project, which included the management of resources, safety, quality and production on a daily basis.

Shift ForemanResponsible for the daily shift operations of a drill and blast for New Karak Road Tunnel Project, Malaysia. Work included installation of pattern rock bolt and shotcrete lining and vibration monitoring of blasts. Responsibilities also includes the training of local labour in work operations and job safety, there was no lost time of accidents in the time I was on the project.

Mining Superintendent– Responsible for Personnel and plant resources for the daily shift operations in the construction of the shaft collar, stripping raise bore hole to 4.5m diameter and cement – lining to a depth of 25m, construction of head frame – winders etc. Pasminco Mines, Roseberry, Tasmania

Responsible for all work involved in establishing and construction of Portal for Decline surface to 10 level ZC Mine. Responsible to form a group (40 men) and management of this group, plant and equipment and budget/programming for major underground development works associated with the mine modernization and ventilation upgrade of the Pasminco Mine Broken Hill. Work included major shaft and tunnel excavations and support.

Mining SuperintendentResponsible for management of personnel to develop the bottom levels of the mine with a small group of miners. Work included excavating large areas for construction of loading station, maintenance bay and pump station, ground support including shotcreting, responsible for safety performance.

Shift BossResponsible for supervising the shift operations in all areas of the mine which included major works such as: - Open stoping; developing – rising – driving; timber stoping, pillar stoping, high production stoping in the loader cut and fill areas, level repairs, stope preparation, shaft services and stores, sill and gangway timbering, trucking and timber runners, stope support – cable dowels, longhole drilling, shotcreting.
