GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL

SKILLS FOR LIFE!

Dear Parents/Caregivers

CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

Zach came in 8th place at the Canterbury Cross Country Championships last week. We must congratulate Zach on an amazing performance and to be 8th fastest runner in Canterbury in his age group is outstanding, no wonder I can’t keep up with him on the field! Sam and Elsie also ran well finishing mid field in a rather large field of runners. Congratulations to the three of you, we are proud of your efforts.

CLASS CERTIFICATES

Class certificates were awarded to Josie and Tristyn in Room 2, Samual and Rowan in Room 1. We congratulate you on your achievements.

HOUSE COMPETITION

Our house group points are mounting up, Vulcan has 284 points, Lookout has 282 and Alexander has 250. Lookout has closed the gap on Vulcan; please remember that your positive behaviour in class and the playground, the spot on cards and class certificates all contribute to house points.

TREE PLANTING AT RESERVE

We have attached some photos of the children planting some natives at the Tipapa Reserve last week. The Greta Valley Village Association is developing the reserve in stages as time and finances allow. They have already fenced off one part and the children helped with some earlier planting this year. There are plans to do more fencing and planting. An important part of this is having the children contributing to their own community so they have a sense of belonging, ownership and responsibility. Thanks to Mandy Earl and Murray Messervy for including us in the programme of development here.

TRAINEE TEACHER

It has been a pleasure to have our trainee teacher Toka Te Taua (Mr T) with us over the past week and a half. Toka has established great relationships with the students and will return in Term 4 when he will be here over a period of four weeks.

PARENT INTERVIEWS/STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

Our grateful thanks to all those who were able to attend our Student-led Conferences and Parent Teacher Interviews yesterday. These are a valuable source of information for both teacher, student and parent/caregiver. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit with the teacher and your child regarding their progress and future learning, please call us and make an appointment. The sample books which are used in these conference sessions will be sent home this Friday afternoon and we would like them returned during the following week before end of term which is next Friday 7th July.

FUELS FOR SCHOOLS DONATION

We would like to acknowledge and express our thanks to South Fuels who operate the ‘Fuel for Schools Programme.’ Businesses who use Southfuels nominate a school to receive a donation of 1cent for every 2 litres of fuel they use. Recently we were awarded $1000.00 from this fund. Rob Taylor from South Fuels made a presentation to the school last week. David, Dianne and Ben Pankhurst have been major contributors to this programme and we would especially like to thank them along with all others who nominate our school. We have bought new sports equipment with this funding.

NORTH CANTERBURY RURAL SUPPORT

We would also like to thank the North Canterbury Rural Support Trust for another considerable donation which we have just received for our school. The following is a statement made by Doug Archbold regarding the donation.

Quote: “You may remember I have talked to each of you about our Trust making a donation which we hoped would go towards subsidizing school trips and camps. There was universal acknowledgement by you all, that this was an area where many parents struggled with the cost of these activities.
The primary reason for the support we are offering has been the effects of nearly three years drought on farmers and service industries in the Hurunui district. In addition, the "Kaikoura" earthquake has added another layer of stress both financially and socially to many rural families.
Our Trust has been the recipient of many generous donations from a wide variety of donors, both private individuals and commercial firms. It is this money that we feel needs to go back into the community.
It is our intention also, to donate a special book to each school, suitable for 6/8 year olds, that has special connections with the earthquake.” End of quote.

We have been humbled by the generosity of many organisations who have contributed to our well-being in this matter. Our grateful thanks to Doug and the team at the North Canterbury Rural Support Trust. We will use this money for future school trips and camps.

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS GRANT

Over the past two years I have been overseer for the Department of Corrections Community Workers in the school. As a result of this the Department of Corrections has acknowledged our sacrifice of time and effort to assist these people in fulfilling their obligations. I applied for a grant that we were entitled to and have received an amount which has allowed us to buy new grounds equipment for the school. We have purchased a new lawn mower, weed eater, spray pack and tree loppers to help us maintain the school grounds appearance. Our thanks to North Canterbury Equipment for the supply of this product at very reasonable prices for us.

We farewell Manon, Jean and Sophie at the end of this term. It has been wonderful having you in our community and we wish you all the best in your move to Waipara.

NEWSPAPERS

Rooms 1 and 2 are looking for newspapers. If you have some, please send them along to school as we use them for all sorts of activities. The Northern Outlook, Rural News and The Hurunui News are all a perfect size for use in the classroom.

GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

Included in this newsletter is the second issue of the free Grapevine Magazine for families. We are very grateful to receive this great resource free, and hope you are enjoying the great articles and information.
