FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

Greetings from Colorado! We are looking forward to meeting you at The Summit here in Colorado Springs, July 21 – 28, 2013. Initially we intended to send this note by snail mail (the envelopes were already addressed!), but because of the length of the newsletter and our desire to get it to you as soon as possible, we have opted to go ‘green’ and email it to you instead. Plus, you will find many links to helpful information just a click away. Please read this newsletter carefully and thoroughly – so many important details for your trip and conference experience are included here. May we suggest packing it with your bags to bring with you? If you have questions, email us at or through our website at You might familiarize yourself with the enclosed map, especially noting the Registration Desk in Loomis Hall and the Conference Office in Worner 117.

Safe travels to you all,

Cecelia Harris

Be sure your name is prominently displayed on your package. (Calligraphy optional!)

INTERNET/WIFI

CCGuest is a free, open wireless network that you can join without any configuration or registration. It is meant for internet access to browse the web, check email and/or flight schedules, etc. It is an unsecure network, so we don’t recommend doing online banking or e-commerce. Tigernet2 is the college’s robust, full-featured and secure wireless network. In order to connect to Tigernet2, you must configure your wireless cards according to the instructions available on the college website and also register your computers. You will need the following information: Username, conf16 and Password, CChk2013. You should use Tigernet2 if you need advanced features such as VPN, want to make an online purchase or do online banking.

We recommend using CCGuest by default and only using Tigernet2 if you have a specific need, since CCGuest is much easier to connect to and is the same speed as Tigernet2.

GUILD REPRESENTATIVES MEETING

Join us on Tuesday, July 23 at 5:15 pm in Bemis Hall for the Guild Rep meeting. All calligraphy guilds and societies are asked to send a representative to this meeting. This is the time and place where we’ll distribute the detailed list of US & Canadian guild contact information, compiled this year by our very own Tammi Jo Klajnbart. This meeting is an important opportunity to discuss guild successes and concerns, so that we can help each other to be more successful in perpetuating and promoting calligraphy.

SERENDIPITY

Be ready for Serendipity from 7 – 9 pm on Friday night, where any conference participant is welcome to share tips or demo tricks of the trade. (Note we are beginning our evening one half hour earlier to allow more time for sharing.) Please consider what you might bring to share. By July 10, email Tammi Jo at mailto:o sign up to participate. (Serendipity demonstrators will be assigned one table each. You may not sell any items during this event.)

WEATHER TIPS

Colorado enjoys a semi-arid climate with very low humidity and is around 6000 ft above sea level. Average daytime temperature in July is 84º F/28.8º C, but will typically not feel as hot as areas with higher humidity. Evenings can be cool, with temperatures averaging 55º F/12.8º C, so dressing in layers is a good idea. You will probably want a light jacket as well. In good years, we can enjoy a brief thunderstorm in the afternoon that soon clears off to our normal sunshine. Because of the high altitude, it is important to protect your skin with sunscreen or a hat.

HIGH ALTITUDE CONCERNS

Colorado College sits at approximately 6000 ft above sea level, which means that you should be aware of signs of altitude sickness and ways to prevent it. These tips and more information can be found at

Acute altitude sickness may be associated with any combination of the following symptoms: Fatigue, Headache, Dizziness, Insomnia, Shortness of breath during exertion, Nausea, Decreased appetite, Swelling of extremities or Social withdrawal.

People with acute altitude sickness often attribute their symptoms to other causes such as an uncomfortable bed, bad food, or a hangover. However, it is important to recognize that these symptoms may indicate a high altitude illness. The body needs time to adjust to a high altitude. WebMD suggests the following:

• Avoid extra physical exertion for the first 24 hours

• Dry nasal passages may result in bleeding. A simple saline nasal spray may help.

• Drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcoholic beverages (drink more water than you usually do for 3 days before coming to Colorado). You will be given a water bottle with your Welcome Bag, and you’ll find purified water stations in nearly every building on campus.

• If you have any health concerns, please contact your physician or health care provider prior to travel.
