Greenville Middle School

Rhonda Schaar, Principal

Principal’s Ponderings…..
As our first grading period draws to an end it is the perfect time to reflect on all that has been accomplished this quarter for and by our students and staff. Our new staff members have made their mark in being student focused and making their classes places of learning. Thanks and recognition to our new teachers: 5/6 grade English and Social Studies teacher Mrs Jen Staugler, 6th grade Math and English Mr. Kyle Miklas, Interventionist Mrs. Tiffany Oswalt, 5th grade Shannan Miller and 5th grade band and music Mr Erick VonSas!! Our WAVE Leaders and Greenville Goal Getter groups are dedicated and valuable components to our school community. We’ve had trips to the Brethren’s home, participated in the homecoming parade, enjoyed a 5th grade field trip to the Victoria Theater, an all school character assembly and a 5th grade play about John Henry. The best and most devoted group of teachers in Darke county continues to work tirelessly to provide a quality education for our students. Most of all, credit is given to the students and families of Greenville Middle School for accepting the challenge of becoming the best they can be. I continue to be grateful for the opportunity to share your children with you! Don’t hesitate to call or email with questions, concerns or a chance to brag! 548-3525;
Thanks for your support!

ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT:

Attendance: Please call the office at 548-3525 and let Kathy know if your child will be absent. There will be incentives worked into the second nine weeks for students who attend all week

DID YOU KNOW?

• Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.

• Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.

• Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.

• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.

• Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.

TRANSPORTATION:
We are not able to keep every student's name on a bus route who does not actually ride a bus. If your child has not ridden the bus at all so far this year, they have been removed from the route. If, at any point during the year, your child needs to ride the bus, parents can call the Bus Barn @ 548-4464 and we will be happy to set them back up. If you have moved and need to change your address, be sure and get in touch with your child's school before calling the Bus Barn to change your child's address. or a form can be downloaded from the school's website @ The transportation page is located under District. Changes could take up to 72 hours to complete. If you have questions, you may call The Bus Garage @ 548-4464.

PTA is collecting BOX TOPS! Last month’s top collector was Mikayla Martin! Thanks Mikayla and congratulations to Mrs. Staugler’s first period for earning a donut party by collecting the most Box Tops. We collected over $380 for the PTA last month!

November’s top collector will receive a pizza, popcorn, candy and soda to enjoy their own movie night at home!! The homeroom that collects the most will earn a popcorn and juice party for their class… (thanks to Marco’s for the Pizza coupon and the PTA for the other prizes)

This year we have partnered with Marco's Pizza to have a pizza day once a month to generate funds for the PTA. Our day of fundraising falls on the second Wed of every month. So make sure spending when you call in to order your pizza you let them know it's to support South Middle School PTA. Marco’s Pizza night for SMS is November 11. The homeroom with the most orders wins a pizza party!!

Help Your Child Succeed in School:

Build the Habit of Good Attendance Early

School success goes hand in hand with good attendance!

WHAT YOU CAN DO to help w/ good school attendance

• Set a regular bed time and morning routine.

• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

• Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.

• Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help her transition.

• Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.

• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.

• Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.

• Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
