August 8th, 2016 Meeting Minutes
-Call to order 6:04pm
-Lou, Momodou, Phillipe, Greg, Penny, Loreen, Mo in attendance.
-Thank you to Lou for years of Chairman service, and continued dedication.
-Commissioner Reports
-Momodou constructed letter, sent to school board.
-Will set agenda with Superintendent, meeting to discuss curriculum, justice issues.
-Has a good group interested in Education Subcommitee.
-Penny Summerfest, was successful, need plan for next year.
-25 matches made in match program.
-First article to be published in Recorder.
-Community Policing
-Phillipe undertaking fact finding with Chief.
-How to best approach crisis intervention.
-Police taking training seriously, especially re: Mental health situations.
-Police trying to improve how crisis are handled, CSO doing ridealongs.
-2 Officers working with DA on training.
-Downtown substation hours looking to expand.
-Public raised question of Sgt. McCarthy serving as liaison.
-Chief chooses liaison at this time.
-Commission looking to continue education on Confederate flag.
-Phillipe discusses opinion that issue is at rest.
-Lou would like issue discussed; now that original moratorium is up.
-Lou states credibility of Commission at risk if no further discussion.
-More public comment regarding liaison situation, request to not sweep under rug.
-Matter referred to September meeting for discussion and resolution.
-Commissioners agree that further investigation needed before discussion.
-Loreen states not a lot of information on the subject thus far.
-Mo states Detox center now open, police giving assistance, Dr. Potee director.
-Long term recovery therapy needed.
-Referred to September meeting for possible monthly review.
-Phillipe raises UN Declaration, looking to further advocate tenets.
-Mediation Collaborative training presentation.
-Meetings now posted on town website.
-Issues of poverty, should they be discussed in future?
-Loreen states it is isolating factor, those struggling need someone to listen.
-Food, shelter, education access needed.
-Lack of adequate transportation.
-Housing issues.
-Elderly /disabled rights.
