6.0Presentations and Discussions

6.1Greely Community Park feedback - Survey

More time has been given by the City for feedback on this park that is scheduled to be in Water’s Edge. The survey results on the Greely Community Park, based on approximately 187 respondents, were presented by Stephanie Morris,Sunset Lakes, as follows:

Skateboard park – 47% yes; 53% no

BMX - 40% yes; 60% no

Basketball - 78% yes; 22% no

Tennis Courts - 78% yes; 22% no

Shade structure - 95% yes; 5% no

Play structure - 97% yes; 4% no

Hockey Arena - 74% yes; 26% no

Bathroom - 84% yes; 16% no

Extra lighting - 85% yes, with the majority stating throughout the park

Electric car charging stations – 35% yes

Affiliation with a Community group – 42% of survey respondents identified with a community association, with the majority of these responses coming from South Village and Water’s Edge.

Thirteen respondents stated they did not want soccer fields, and some concern was expressed at this meeting about soccer fields in people’s backyards. However, overall the majority want soccer fields.

Some interest had been expressed in a splash pad, but that is unlikely to be in the park as it would be too expensive, and there are numerous restrictions because we are on well and septic.

The bathroom issue is contentious and most respondents want one in the park as it is too far to go the Community Centre, which is not always open, but cost and maintenance are issues. One person suggested looking into whether we could have a more simple type washroom, similar to thoseon highways that would cost less and be easier to maintain. Doug Thompson said that he would talk to City officials about this.

As to whether costs could be shifted around, new park money and old money marked for parks cannot be mingled.

With regard to lighting in the park, it was suggested that solar lights or motion sensitive lighting should be considered.

PowerPlay Sports will be putting in an arena, ice pad, and indoor soccer, fitness facilities, washrooms, but this will likely not be for another five years. A shared parking lot is being considered.

Phase I comments are due to the City by January 15th. Phase II is considered to be the more contentious phase with the BMX and skateboard park proposals, and we will have a couple of months to provide comments for this phase.

There were also other comments made in the survey which are being compiled, and the survey results will be forwarded to the City. Bruce Brayman will meet with the City Park Planner to go over the results.

6.0New Business
