Military Affairs Committee Service to the Military Award

The Military Affairs Committee Service to the Military Award will be awarded annually to an organization or individual who has provided significant service to the military community of Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. This award may be given for a single, significant event or in recognition of sustained support over the years. The award will be given annually and the period of service considered will be the calendar year. The award will be presented at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership (GSDP) Annual banquet in the year following the year considered for the award. The award presented on February 2, 2017 would be for service rendered in 2016.

Award:

The award will consist of a plaque presented to an individual or the representative of an organization listing the name of the award, the recipient, and the year. There may also be an award plaque in the GSDP headquarters, which lists all previous recipients of the award.

Award Criteria:

The Military Affairs Committee Service to the Military Award will be awarded based on the following criteria. For the purposes of this award, the committee will consider the military to consist of members of the Armed Forces of the United States, to include active and reserve components, the Mississippi Army National Guard, the Mississippi Air National Guard; retired members of the aforementioned; family members of any of the above; and the various Veteran’s Organizations. It is not necessary for a nominee to meet all of the criteria listed below but these criteria are typical of what is expected of a winner of this award.

The following criteria will be used in determining the winner of the award:

·  The service rendered should provide direct benefit to military members, as defined above;

·  The service should enhance the image and reputation of the military and/or military organizations;

·  The service should be above and beyond that which is required of an individual as part of their employment or outside the mission of the organization, however, if an organization or individuals performs their duty in manner that exceeds expectations, they may be recognized;

·  Activities should enhance the quality of life of the military community;

·  The individual or organization should promote awareness of the military community;

·  The service should support the initiatives of the military organizations in the community.

In the event the nominee is being recognized for sustained service to the military community, the period of sustained service will normally be three or more years.

Nomination Process:

Nominations will typically be made by members of the Military Affairs Committee as a result of their routine interaction with members of the community. However, citizens are also encouraged to nominate individuals or organizations. Nominations may be given directly to a member of the Military Affairs Committee, the Chamber of Commerce Advisory Board, or submitted to the GSDP offices.

A nomination shall consist of completing a nomination form which will list the name and contact information for the person or organization being nominated, the name and contact information of the person making the nomination, and an essay detailing the service provided and its impact on the military community. The nomination should address each of the criteria listed above as best as possible. Specific information such as hours or dollars spent in support, the number of military members impacted by the service, and other similar metrics should be included if known.

Nominations will be due by 5 p.m. on November 15, 2016 to the GSDP Office at 200 East Main Street, Starkville, MS 39759 or by email to Heath Barret () and awards given at the GSDP Annual Banquet on Thursday, February 2, 2017.

The Military Affairs Committee will form a sub-committee each year, consisting of committee member volunteers, to review the nominations. The sub-committee will then make a single recommendation to the full committee for endorsement as the winner of the award.

Along with the nomination form, please provide a minimum of 15 photographs of the individual/group throughout their career or time of military service and community involvement. Photographs will be used in a video presented at the GSDP Annual Banquet to honor the individual/group. Photographs will not be returned.
