Job Opening – Land Steward

Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust is the non-profit land trust for Bucksport, Orland, Dedham and Verona Island. GPMCT owns and manages about 4,600 acres (including the 4,500-acre Great Pond Mountain Wildlands in Orland) for wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation and sustainable forestry, and holds conservation easements on private land in Orland and Dedham/Lucerne. GPMCT seeks an energetic, detail-oriented person who loves people and the outdoors to fill the position of Land Steward.

GPMCT has an active management program in the Wildlands and on its Bucksport property, with a strong corps of stewardship volunteers, a seasonal ranger and a contract forester. The Land Steward will oversee and build the stewardship program, recruiting, organizing and managing volunteers and interns and organizing work events. The Steward will oversee land management, monitoring and maintenance of roads, trails, parking lots, campsites and more. The Steward will collaborate with the Stewardship Committee, and report to the Executive Director.

Successful applicants must have excellent volunteer management and communication skills; be self-directed, organized and detail-oriented; able to hike and work outdoors; and have computer expertise, a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Additional skills desired include some or all of the following: ability with hand/power tools and small tractor; experience with trail/gravel road maintenance; GPS and GIS mapping skills; experience building and managing a volunteer network; a background in natural resource management or natural sciences; and practical experience in land management.

This position will start April 1, 2017 and be 20 hours/week, year-round, with flexible hours. Some evening and weekend hours required. Compensation is $20,000 per year with potential for future growth. Mileage reimbursed while on job site or fulfilling duties. Professional development opportunities available. The successful candidate will initially be hired for a one-year term, with a 90-day probationary period.
