Option B: Oceans and their coastal margins.

Great Ocean Conveyor Belt – Thermohaline Circulation

Student Produced Learning Resource

Learning Objective: Explain the thermal transfers of energy within oceans and the importance of oceanic conveyor belts.

Task: In your assigned group, you are required to produce a short video.

Part 1: Research - Produce a detailed, scripted explanation of how the great ocean conveyor belt works and how Thermohaline circulation is responsible for thermal transfers.

Highlight the social, economic and environmental importance of the great ocean conveyor belt.

Refer to specific geographic locations i.e. Equator, North Atlantic, Southern ocean, Greenland. Especially where the water sinks (downwell) and rises (upwells).

As a minimum you should include a definition or mention of the following;

Define Thermohaline / Explain what is driving the movement?
Antarctic Bottom Water / North Atlantic Deep Water / Nutrient upwelling / Temperature at mid-latitudes esp. Europe. / Circumpolar current

The more thorough the research, the better the end product. Use the links on geographymonkey.com to help.

Part 2: Application. Narrate your script over the NASA Animation (This is available for download from managebac or your teacher.

Great Ocean Conveyor Belt

You can either project this on the board and then film it. Or record your narration and use imovie.

You should ensure your timings when you speak are in sync with the animation. I.e. on the north Atlantic when referring to the north Atlantic.

The total video length should be in the region of 3 minutes.
