V. Approval of Agenda Information / Action
A. Senator K. Powell moved to approve the agenda for January 24th, 2014. Senator Phizacklea seconded. DISCUSSION: None. Motion passes unanimously.
VI. Approval of Minutes Information / Action
A. Senator B. Powell moved to approve the minutes for January 17th, 2014. Vice President Duran seconded. DISCUSSION: None. Senator Poulsen abstained, motion passes.
VII. President’s Report Information / Action
President Porter reported on the following:
- He said that it has been a busy week. He had his weekly meeting with Vice President for Student Services, Lynn Mahlberg and it went well. They talked about events happening and the Student Forum on February 14th and how they will be advertising for this event.
- He, Vice President Duran, and Secretary Saili attended the special Board of Regents meeting that was streamed live to Berg Hall conference room. There was an item on the agenda that was for GBC, concerning the English as a Second Language Certification and it was passed. It was to reduce the fees for this certification, we will be losing a little bit of revenue, but it will put GBC in a competitive position with other institutions that offer this same certification.
- Most of the week was spent planning for Student Forum on February 14th. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas had theirs on Wednesday and they had about 30 attendees. He also said that the flier for the event have been sent out to the Senators and Center Directors. He encouraged everyone to advertise for this event. Vice Chancellor Abba will be at the forum as well.
VIII. Vice President’s Report Information
Vice President Duran reported on the following:
- He had his first SOLAR meeting of the semester yesterday and he had 20 people attend. There was a representative from every club and it went well.
- Next SOLAR meeting will be February 6th at 12:30pm in the SGA Conference room.
IX. Treasury Report Information / Action
Vice President for Business Affairs, Sonja Sibert, reported on the following:
- She said that either someone from the Controller’s Office or she will be giving the treasury reports. The next report will be the second Friday in February.
X. Student Advocate’s Report Information
Advocate Mendez reported on the following:
- She and representatives from Student Financial Aid went to different schools and did FAFSA Nights. On Wednesday they went to Elko High School and did FAFSA Night and a FAFSA Day for McDermitt.
XI. Senator Reports Information
A. Battle Mountain
- Senator Linville said that she and Center Director, Ami Rogers, did their Backpack drawing. A total of 26 students entered the drawing, and she said the Student Forum fliers are up.
B. Elko
- Senator Phizacklea said that movie night went well overall. They had a total of 15 students attend and they loved the movie Last Vegas. They are planning for the Student Forum and for their events next month.
C. Ely
- None.
D. Pahrump
- None.
E. Winnemucca
- Senator Poulsen said that they got a new staff member for CNA, and she also mentioned that they have a lot of new students. Their money has been approved for February and now they can plan and advertise for the Student Forum.

XIII. Unfinished Business
A. 67th Annual International Meeting for the SRM Information / Action
Secretary Saili moved to approve GBC’s Basin Biology Association Vice President, Melissa Mahlberg’s, request of a cap of $500.00 in SGA funding to subsidize the cost of attendance of two club members to the 67th Annual International Meeting for the Society of Range Management’s “From Dusty Trails to Waning Wetlands” presentation to be held in Orlando, Florida on February 8th-13th, 2014. Senator Phizacklea seconded. DISCUSSION: Vice President Duran had said that Basin Biology Association had attended SOLAR meetings and were active on campus last semester. Melissa Mahlberg said that she is giving a poster presentation, which she submitted her abstract in August for, and has now been notified that it has been accepted. She will be talking about her research project that she completed this past summer about vegetation study. She was able to do data collection on this project. Director of Environmental Health, Safety and Security, Pat Anderson, said that both Melissa and Kaci Spahan had worked very hard for this project and that they deserve to attend this meeting.

XIV. New Business
A. Tuition and Fees Student Forum Information / Action
Senator Poulsen moved to approve Vice President Duran’s request a cap of $250.00 to purchase food and refreshments for a Tuition and Fees Student Forum to be held on the Elko Campus on February 14th, 2014. Senator Ramirez seconded. DISCUSSION: Vice President Duran said that food will help bring in more student participation. They will have the Bighorn Bistro cater this event, and they will have muffins, different pastries, orange juice, coffee, etc. Motion passes unanimously.
B. GBC Nature Club Sanctioning Information / Action
Senator K. Powell moved to approve President Porter’s request for the sanctioning of the GBC Nature Club. Senator B. Powell seconded. DISCUSSION: Vice President Duran, being Chair of the SOLAR Programming Board, said that this club has completed all the required documents and that they have more than enough student members to become a sanctioned club. SOLAR meetings will now be held in the Ronald V. Hicks SGA Senate Chambers because it will have to be via IAV.

C. GBC Budget Reduction Summary Information
Vice President for Business Affairs, Sonja Sibert, discussed with the SGA Officers the current GBC Budget Reduction Strategy (See Attached). DISCUSSION: She said that President Curtis briefly went over this at the President’s Welcome Back. She made clear what each term stood for, and went over this with the Officers. Some of the positions mentioned in the report that are being eliminated are vacant at the moment, and some have been vacant for more than a year; this also helps with the budget reduction.
XV. Public Comment Information
- Senator Poulsen said that she will be working on trying to revive the running club, and hopefully get it going before the end of the semester.
