Graphic Organizer for Research Paper:
Introduction:
- Here you will tell about your topic and end the paragraph with your thesis
Answer the following questions about our topic in your introduction:
What is your topic?
Why is it controversial?
What are some facts about it?
What is your thesis? (try to provide three examples in your thesis you will present in your paper)
Body Paragraphs:
- In each body paragraph you will focus on one of the reasons you presented in your thesis.
- You need to incorporate your research into each one of these paragraphs by paraphrasing, quoting or summarizing. Remember each time you quote paraphrase or summarize you need to end the sentence with a parenthetical citation. Below is an example of a body paragraph with parenthetical citations. Shoot for at least one parenthetical citation per paragraph but you can have more:
As the world’s population grows, so does its need for energy. There are two types of energy that are used. They include renewable sources, such as wind, solar, and water; and non-renewable sources, fossil fuels such as, oil, gas, and coal (“Introduction to the Energy Crisis”). Fossil fuels are used more than renewable sources because they are cost effective. “The majority of the world's electricity is generated from coal, and many products used in contemporary society depend on oil and natural gas” (“Introduction to the Energy Crisis”). As the usage of these fossil fuels continues their availability will decrease. If it is not taken into consideration and other forms of energy are not utilized the world can face more than just an energy crisis.
- Each body paragraph should look at your reasons presented in your thesis and answer the who, what, when, where, and why about that reason. Each time you present information back it up with research you found. Once you present the researched info- cite it with a parenthetical citation.
- One of the last body paragraphs in your paper should reflect the opposition of your thesis: For example, if you are saying that video games do not promote violence- find research that states it does and then present information from your research that proves it does not. This helps validate your thesis and shows you are aware of other points of view but can prove how they are wrong.
Conclusion:
- Start by restating your thesis. Try to reword it though.
- Mention some of the best arguments you presented throughout your paper
- Make a statement on what kind of solution you think should happen
- End with a call of action that shows how your point of view is the best
