1 Semester: 1 Credit

Prerequisite

Open to grades 10-12 with permission of the instructor and completion of at least Art 1. This course is for students seriously interested in the practical applications of art in the work place.

Graphic Arts and Illustration

Graphic Design III students generate ideas for their work by examining their environment and researching design ideas from the past, and analyzing designs of the present. Students combine knowledge of design elements with expertise in other areas, such as typography, technology, photography, and reproduction methods. They record ideas, sketches, and notes about innovative designers and design history in a journal. Investigating, interpreting, and reinventing subjects by attempting multiple solutions lead students into trying new and unexpected combinations of visual elements. Students use vocabulary specific to graphic arts, including terminology for equipment, materials, and processes.

Classroom Expectations: Be in class, in your assigned seat, completing your bell activity, or following the directions for class preparation on the board when the tardy bell rings. Respect yourself and others. No academic dishonesty. When the bell rings at the end of class, please remain in your seat and wait to be dismissed. All cell phones need to be turned off. Unauthorized use of electronic devices, horseplay, or any other deliberate classroom disruptions will be considered a code of conduct violation. All art students are expected to participate in the annual spring art show as part of their graded curriculum. Specifics will be provided to parents and the students at the beginning of the second semester.

Strategies: Students will use what they see, know, and have experienced as sources for examining, understanding, and creating original artworks. Emphasis is placed on developing drawing skills to provide students with the eye and hand coordination necessary for advancement to higher level art courses. Students are expected to consider current concepts and topics to create original artworks from observation and original sources without the use of published and internet sources. Transferable creativity and problem solving skills will be stimulated and encouraged throughout the course.

Instructor: Mz. Jimmie is a certified highly qualified art teacher for the state of Texas and a working artist. Prior to her teaching career, she operated her own art and framing business for twenty years. In addition to a traditional university degree, she completed a two year apprenticeship to a Czechoslovakian artist to become a stone master. She is represented in Arkansas by the American Art Gallery in Hot Springs, AR, and has work available nationwide via the internet through representation with Green Ranch Gallery.

Methods of Instruction: The class will be conducted in a lecture, project, and group discussion manner. Written assignments will be used to attain and reinforce basic art core knowledge through the study of art history, art techniques/terminology, and cultural references. Students will be expected to take notes on all lectures, projects, and classroom discussions. Students will be allowed to use those notes when taking written essay critique tests, providing the guidelines are followed. Any deviation from these guidelines will be considered an incident of academic dishonesty. Notes will not be allowed for use on any matching and multiple choice tests.

Guidelines for notes: All notes must be handwritten on regular notebook paper unless provided by the instructor as notebook reference. You may NOT photocopy someone else’s notes unless you have a physical challenge supported by a medical doctor.

Grading:

Daily work60%

Tests and Projects40%

My grading system is very simple. If you do your work, meet the objectives with quality work and turn it in on time, you will get a good grade. Poor craftsmanship or unfinished work will reflect in your grade! Assignments will be given with due dates posted in the assignment directions. Students must complete their work on time. Due dates are NOT OPTIONAL. Be prepared to have homework, if needed. Your work will be turned in on the due date at the stage it is in. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to get your work turned in. If the class has moved on, you will need to complete the assignment missed at home. Following assignments, students will participate in individual written or group critiques. Student participation during group critiques will be graded.

Extra Credit: Opportunities for participation in contests are available in the surrounding areas. Participation in the visual arts division of the county fair in Clarksville, or other approved art competitions, will earn a student an extra test grade of 100. Students may also participate in VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) held in February. Extra Credit test grades will be available for participants.

Missing or Late Work: Late work will be penalized. If work is more than three days late without prior arrangements, a “zap” will be issued. If you know you will be absent, the assignment that is due will be accepted early. If you, the student, are absent due to illness or school related activity, it is your responsibility to find out what information was covered during the absence. Assignments missed due to absences are due promptly upon return to class.

Required supplies: All students are expected to have and bring to class each day the following supplies:

Notebook-Your choice of make/style. You must be able to add handouts to the notebook for reference.

Notebook paper to write on.

Pen and pencil to take notes, tests, etc.

Provided supplies-Avery ISD has always provided the bulk of all art materials for their students each year, whereas most schools charge an art fee to cover cost of supplies. Due to the incidence of supply abuse and vandalism last year, each student in Graphic Arts will receive an art bag with supplies for their personal and exclusive use. This kit contains items that they will need throughout the whole year, including pencils. The student will be responsible for this kit and its contents. I will replace intact “used up” pencils that are too small to be sharpened upon receipt of old pencils, but I will not replace pencils that students have broken into pieces, lost, or carried off. I will not replace any other abused or lost kit supplies. Lost or abused items will have to be replaced by the student to complete required assignments. If a student does not have the required supplies to work on the assignment in class, a disciplinary report will be issued. Kits are not to leave the art room unless checked out with the instructor.

Access and Tutoring: I will open the classroom each morning by 7:30am for students needing to work on art or needing tutoring. In addition, I will survey students during the first few weeks of the school year to determine which afternoon(s) open studio for work and help is most appropriate.

Student Expectations:

This is an advanced level three course. Students will be expected to be self-motivated and able to manage project time and deadlines. In addition to working on individual projects in an ongoing manner, each student will be responsible for contributions to larger class projects.
