GRAND FINAL - Match Report

Nova Fusion v Souths Jupiter

11 30

As the early morning fog began to lift, the courts started to dry out and with a quick sweep (thanks Troy) playing conditions couldn’t have been more perfect. A steady stream of supporters began to roll in and before long the sideline was a sea of green. There was excitement in the air, and so there should have been, Team Fusion were about to play in the GRAND FINAL!

Pre match nerves seemed to be under control and if there were any it certainly didn’t show. The warm up was comprehensive and instructions were clear. Stay calm and play smart. It was time to take the court, Fusion were focused and ready to fire. It was at this point in time that I realised I was a little nervous and perhaps should have went to the bathroom. Too late, the whistle sounded and Souths were off with first centre. It was a quick passage of play but strong defence forced an almighty pass straight out the back door. Now in possession, could we convert the turnover? After a couple of attempts we weren’t so lucky. Either was Souths GD who hit the deck in the first couple of minutes. This could be a game changer I thought, but bravely she returned to the court. Souths managed to convert their centre after what seemed to be a very long time. Fusion were quick to respond and also converted theirs. It was a close contest in the first quarter with Souths just in front, 7 to 5.

The second quarter commenced in a similar fashion with both teams working hard to maintain possession. Scoring opportunities were minimal for both teams and at this point we were definitely in the game. 11 to 9 at half time.

And the rest is ancient history really! It was a great effort by all who did the best they could on the day. Unfortunately it just wasn’t our day and Souths forged ahead to take the premiership 30 to 11.

I couldn’t be any prouder of the 9 girls that have made up team Fusion this year. You have all grown in skill, strength and ability and have shown great resilience against some much bigger and physical opponents. You did it! You made the GRAND FINAL! And although the score line may not have shown it, you are all winners in my eyes. A HUGE thankyou to all our parents, grandparents and friends for your ongoing support throughout the season. To Grant for scoring each week and providing those all important goal stats. Also a big thank you to our Team Manager Megan, who as always is super organised and helpful. It has been a rewarding experience to coach team Fusion this year and I have enjoyed every minute! GO FUSION! GO NOVA! AND I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL BACK NEXT YEAR!
