Two-day training for Parent Group Leaders for the Incredible Years®Parent
and Baby Programme
The course will be led by
Dr. Sue Evans, Consultant Child Psychologist.
13th & 14th June 2019 (Bangor)
The Parent and Baby programme is based on the same collaborative principles as the other IY Parent Programmes and includes discussion, viewing video vignettes and practice. However it is different because having the babies are present enables live practice. The programme has eight/nine sessions that focus on the child’s first year of life. It is arranged developmentally with the early material focusing on the first three months of the baby’s life and gradually progressing through to when babies are around nine months old. It is recommended that babies are under six months at the start of the programme.
This two-day training day is designed specifically for the delivery of the Parent and Baby programme and it is not necessary to have undertaken the basic leader training prior to attending. It introduces participants to the content of the programme and the collaborative process skills by which it is delivered. The core of the programme is a range of activities to promote positive relationships with babies and to enhance their learning through singing, touching and talking with them. However the training also introduces other curriculum components around safety, health, routines and the developmental process. Logistics of running a programme where both parents and babies are present are discussed. Given the health component and information needs of parents of young babies, it is recommended that the infant programme is co-delivered with a Health Visitor. Please note unless twelve people are registered to attend, this training will not be run.
Dr Sue Evans is an Educational Psychologist of many years experience who now works as a Child Psychologist with Powys LHB where she has responsibility fordeveloping a county wide IY strategy. She is a mentor in the Parent, Child and Teacher programmes.
