Johnny Appleseed Literacy Lesson Plan

Unit: Who is Johnny Appleseed (Reading)
Goals: The students will know who is Johnny Appleseed and will gain information about apples.
Objectives and Standards:
-TLW participate in a discussion on Johnny Appleseed and what they know about
him.
- K.1.08.e Participate in the creation of graphic organizer (KWHL)
-TLW participate in a discussion on Johnny Appleseed through actively listening and watching a story about Johnny Appleseed.
- K.1.09 Use active comprehension strategies to derive meaning while
reading and check for understanding after each reading.
- K.1.09.a. Derive meaning while reading.
- K.1.09.b. Check for understanding after reading.
-K.1.07 Develop and extend reading vocabulary.
- K.1.07.a. Build vocabulary by listening to literature and
participating in discussions.

- The visual learner through watching the book on Smartboard.
- The auditory learner through whole group discussion and hearing book read out loud.
- The musical learner through the song played during Q & A.
- The tactile learner through coloring the worksheet.
- The kinesthetic learner through Question and Answer game.

Required Prior Knowledge:
- Students should have prior knowledge about apples through life experiences of
either eating apples, seeing pictures of them, or seeing them in the store.
Lesson:
Introduction-
- Who has heard of a man named Johnny Appleseed?
- What are some things you know about Johnny Appleseed?
- Begin KWL chart.
- What does his name make you think of?
Body-
- Add to KWL Chart
- Read book/Play book on Smartboard and discuss how this relates to their personal experiences.
- Complete Johnny Appleseed worksheet.
- Play question and answer game.
Conclusion-
- Complete the KWL Chart
- Put thumbs up if Johnny wore boots. Put thumbs down if he didn’t wear shoes.
- Raise your hand if you learned one thing about Johnny Appleseed.
- Keep your hand up if you learned two.
- Three things? Tell me three things you learned.
