Grammar/ Writing 3 12:00-1:50pm CC3460 10/22/14 - Solomon

Background: Intermediate level students, mostly 17-25, in the US to study English intensively in order to complete a 4-year or Master’s degree. The students are in class four hours a day, taking grammar, writing, reading and vocabulary, and listening and speaking skills. The objectives for this course are discrete grammar skills and writing paragraphs in a variety of formats, focusing on organization, sentence structure and content. The students currently cover one grammar point a week (this week is present perfect) and are tested on Fridays. They also cover one rhetorical writing style in a week – this week focusing on order of importance paragraphs. They have one in-class writing (quiz) per week and then rewrite that paragraph and fix errors in a 2nd draft for a homework grade.

Lesson plan: (May be subject to change as the situation does!)

Review question format for present perfect

Grammar game- warm-up: Have you ever? – Ss have strips of paper where they go around and ask other Ss yes/no questions focusing on correctly formulating questions and short answers. They then write a complete sentence on the back. They have about 8 minutes to see who can get the most strips/ correct sentences written. Ss then report back to the class. (Kinesthetic, tactile, interpersonal learning styles; also gets Ss thinking in English)

Ss go over grammar homework – Practices 6 and 7 – on worksheet to make sure they have written them correctly – pairs or small groups. T walks around to check with each student’s work individually. (Interpersonal)

As a whole class, we go over Chart 4-4 in textbook – focusing on the use of already and yet. Individual Ss volunteer to read. Ss ask questions for clarification and T assists in explanations. ( 2 more uses of present perfect- action happening in the past at an unknown or non- important time, and repeated actions in the past at an unknown or non- important time) Ss check Practice 8 with the T.

Writing: Ss wrote a practice order of importance paragraph for homework. Ss get in groups to read/discuss paragraphs.

T collects these and reviews paragraph organization, sentence structure and content together with class on ELMO. This lets Ss see a variety of examples anonymously and gives more understanding of the format in preparation for mid-term writing test on Friday.
