Graduate Student -- Program Development and Support (Reading and Math)

The Joint Educational Project (JEP) and USC ReadersPlus is seeking a graduate student with at least two years to commit to a program aimed at improvingK-5 grade literacyand math skills in local schools. This person will be responsible for assisting in the coordination the USC Readers Plus program in seven of USC’s adopted“Family of Schools”, training and supporting undergraduate students to tutor K-5 children in one-on-one during the school day and providing academic enrichment during after school hours.

This position requires:

  • Experience working in urban communities, preferably in urban schools;
  • A demonstrated interest in literacy/math education;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks and responsibilities;
  • A self-starter, able to take initiative and work independently;
  • A two-year commitment is preferred to allow for personal growth in the position (minimum of three semesters).

Job responsibilities include:

  • Attending and presenting at staff meetings;
  • Communicating regularly with school coordinators for feedback and support;
  • Meeting with undergraduate tutors to provide guidance for literacy/math instruction;
  • Tracking and managing literacy/math assessments;
  • Managing documentation to contribute to reports;
  • Presenting trainings for the USC Readers and Math Mentors that will instruct them in strategies for the integration of literacy content into tutoring sessions;
  • Engaging in site visits to each of the seven schools to observe tutoring sessions;
  • Helping to develop, collect, and create materials which will improve student efforts to tutor/teach community youngsters.

Position Details:

  • This position requires 20 hours per week.
  • Hourly pay rate $20 beginning August 2017.
  • Tuition remission in the amount of 3 units each semester, beginning fall 2017.
  • Must be available for JEP staff retreat August 14 -18, 2017.
