IU Dean's Report
It was encouraging to see students actively engaged with the Tax Bill. There was a lot of activity in Bloomington and at IUPUI. Bloomington staged a march and protest, and was well-received on campus. Thank you to all who wrote letters and who advocated on behalf of our graduate students. This level of engagement helped Congress understand that the provisions regarding graduate students was not a good idea.
The fight is not over, though. Congress begins serious consideration of reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA). The bill would affect the public service loan forgiveness program and the GradPLUS programs. Doug Wasitis, our Federal Relations representative, is keeping us apprised of the latest developments. He drafted a letter with revisions that will be sent to Senator Todd Young. Dr. Wasitis will be on campus to answer any questions this Friday from 8-4 in room 245 of the Law school. / Wimbush
Purdue University Report
There will be a posting for the interim Dean of the Graduate School and an announcement will be made in the next couple of weeks. As you know, Linda Mason has been serving as the interim Dean.
Curriculog has been implemented at Purdue. It is a single electronic system similar to both CARMIn and APPEAR where both program proposals and courses will be posted to it. Curriculog will help with efficiency in the approval process, and it will allow for a true remonstrance.
Purdue University announced that Kaplan University will be called Purdue University Global which indicates that it serves an online community. It will be on the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s (ICHE) February 22nd agenda for review. / Mohler
Associate Dean's Report
We are very excited to announce that Andrew Gatza, who is getting a PhD in both Urban Education at IUPUI and Mathematics at Bloomington, was selected for Wells Graduate Fellowship. This is the most prestigious fellowship the University Graduate School at Indiana University offers. This is a single-year award valued at $42,000 for the 2018-2019 academic year. Thank you to Brendan Maxcy in the School of Education for nominating Andrew Gatza.
Spring 2018 enrollment data was provided to the committee and can be found in Box.IU.
The Graduate common space is under construction in University Library and should open in March or April. When it is complete, an invitation will be sent for its Opening.
The CIRTL program has grown. There are 155 participants from IUPUI and Bloomington. / Blum

The GPSG passed a resolution to establish an award to acknowledge a faculty member who has contributed to the education of graduate and professional students. The submissions for this award will be by students and will be awarded during the Graduate and Professional Appreciation Week. The GPSG is looking for someone as namesake. We will require that the person is tenured faculty and has been here for at least five years.
The GPEG is to help encourage professional development, and there is a requirement to report what the money was used for. The accomplishments of the students who receive the award gives credit to the University, faculty mentors, and the Schools. / Lawson
Graduate Office Reports
Jean Cleary Act – Travel Report Clarification; Federal compliance is required. The goal is to collect all crime statistics for any domestic travel for more than one night OR repeated use of the same location (e.g. IU considered in “control” of the space used by students) In terms of student travel, generally this is the lodging location for the students when IU funds used to support the travel. If there is mixed funding, err on the side of caution and report it!
If you invite prospective students onto campus and pay for travel and hotel, this is reportable.
IU Public Safety sends out emails quarterly (January, April, July, October) to Deans / Directors / Department Chairs requesting student travel information. The next email will be sent the end of January.
If your unit supports a lot of student travel, use an Excel spreadsheet. You can work directly with Lt. Heather Braun on how best to set up the Excel spreadsheet and how to submit it ()
For more information and to report travel visit https://protect.iu.edu/police-safety/clery/clery-non-campus.html, or contact Rick Erny, Indiana University Public Safety and Institutional Assurance, 317-274-4230,

2:00 p.m. Teaching Assistants and Annual TA Orientation survey results; Anusha Rao, Center for Teaching and Learning
Eight schools responded to the poll to move the TA Orientation to the first Saturday after school starts. Five schools agreed to the move with two schools requesting spring semester orientation. Two schools were unsure due to the conflicts with exam dates in a few departments. One school disagreed and preferred to have the orientation earlier than the usual date.
Two possible options TA Orientations are being considered; to continue conducting the orientation on Thursday, August 16 or to create a hybrid TA Orientation program that could be offered in the beginning of fall and spring semesters.
Successful completion of the hybrid orientation would require in-person attendance on Thursday, August 16 or successful completion of the online module with a 90% score on the module quiz. Another poll will be sent out if the hybrid program is chosen.
