Purpose:This course presents the area of Information Systems Project Management.Virtually all ISbusiness processes involve IS project Management. Some business and individuals make extensive use of IS Project Management, others struggle to understand and use the tools used in IS Project Management. The focus of the course will be to develop in the student some of the skills of IS Project Management and to give the student a practical application of those skills.

Class meeting: The class will meet in …..to discuss the course and select the team Information Systems Projects. All other meetings are in the chat room on WebCt.

Office Hours: Office hours will be held online in the WebCt Chat Room, from 5:30 to 6:00 each Tuesday except during spring break.

Exams: There will be three examsadministered byCASA. Exams typically are multiple choice, fill in the blank, and true false. The questions will come from the lectures. Before taking the exam at CASA, the student must sign up for CASA and then select a time to take the exam. Following the exam, the grades are posted on Courseware used by CASA. More information is at

Information Systems Project: Each student team will work with a client from the nonprofit sector. The Executive Service Corps of Houston will coordinate the projects with the student and the instructor. The project your team selects is made on the first day of class. Prior to the first day of class ESCH provides an online list of Systems Requests from the non profits. Student teams then review the requests prior to class and select several projects that they may be interested in working on. In class on the first day of class, a random assignment of team project order is made. Then the team with the first order selects the project it wants, the team second in order selects from the reminder of the projects and the process continues until all teams have a project. The instructor assigns all projects.

The IS project will serve as the class final exam. The deliverables for the IS project will be posted to the course Wiki and to Turnitin.com by 1200 on the date listed. One letter grade will be subtracted for each day a deliverable is submitted after the due date. Final grading will occur during the final exam period.

Wiki: Each team for their project will maintain a Wiki. Documentation for the teams deliverables will be posted to the Wiki found at, The goal of the Wiki is to keep all stakeholders in the project up to date on activities of the team. The grading for the Information Systems Project comes from the Wiki rubric found at the end of the syllabus. All postings to the team Wiki (see below) are to be made by 1200 on the due date of the deliverable.

Turnitin.com: Students will also post their deliverables to 1200 one day prior to class. For the class is MIS 4374 Section ……, class ID number is ….. and the password is ……. Turnitin.comgetting started for students, instructions are available at

Peer Evaluation: At the end of the course, each student will provide a peer evaluation on the other members of the team. Each student will be given 100 points to assign to the other members of the team. A caveat though is, that the there must be a reasonable deviation in the ratings. Equal or near equal ratings will result in a penalty for the evaluator.

Teams: Student teams are normally self selected; you decide which team you will work on. It is best that you arrive on the first day of class on a team. Teams selected this way are more motivated, work together better and typically work faster. You will be assigned to a team in the event that you are not on a team on the first day of class. This may be an existing team or may be a new team composed of students not on a team. Team size is limited to 4-5 members as this has proven to be a good size for learning and working on a project. There is a chance of a 6 member team, but that occurs when the professor assigns someone to a 5 member team.

Lectures: Lectures will be available online via iTunes Uat the beginning of week indicated in the calendar below. The course is restricted and can only be accessed through the link found on the course home page in WebCt.
