5090 Project

The 50’s through the 90’s were an exciting time historically as well as culturally. We will be looking at each of these decades in groups of 4-6 people trying to discover if the things that occurred culturally then apply culturally today. THE BIG QUESTION IS: How do specific cultural elements that characterized a decade also appear today? You will be proving the answer to this question through the use of the web, presentations and interviews with actual people who lived through the decade.

Grading: Each person will be getting individual grades on individual assignments as well as group grades for the 5090 project (see below).

Presentation: These projects will be presented to the entire class as well as to a panel in a competition of one side of the room versus the other. The winning side will get a prize.

Step 1: Pick your group from the people on your side of the class; this is totally up to you which 4-6 people you want to work with. Your decade will be picked at random from the infamous straw tortilla holder.

Step 2: Research: In your groups of 4-6 people you will get to research all the elements of culture in categories (See ACE categories on the E-side).

a. First you must brainstorm, with your computer or book, all the elements of culture for that decade on a piece of paper as a group (which will be collected). You will brainstorm and write down all the cultural items from that decade and then categorize them underneath the ACE categories.

b. Your group will then pick 6 of the 12 ACE (see below) categories to produce links that back up your ACE topics. For example, in the 50’s we have the birth of Rock and Roll with Elvis and American Bandstand. These will go underneath the MUSIC category

c. You will then divide up all the ACE categories so that each student will have 2 ACE categories.Each person in your group will have to produce 10 good links from the web per category based on the culture of that decade to research. You will give a 1-2 sentence description of what you found in addition to the link. You will be graded individually, however these links will be used later for a group website. ( 20 point, individual grade)

Step 3: Each group will need to produce the following:

1. A multi-paragraph essay comparing their decade with today in MLA format. Each person will write one of the paragraphs for the essay with one person assembling the entire document. Each paragraph is worth 25 points and will be graded individually. (25 points, individual grade)

2. You will also have to produce awebsite that details your findings with links that prove how specific cultural elements of the ____ decade also appear today. Each website should have the following:

A. An introduction to what you will be talking about in front of the class as well as any other pertinent information. You may use part of your paper for this section.

B. 6 of 12 ACE categories that you researched from other group members.

C. At least 10 pictures of the culture then as well as how it is seen today.

D. Underneath each picture you will have to write clearly how it relates to your decade as well as today. (50 pointsgroup grade see bottom for more explanation)

3. Pick one of the mediums from below to show the class your findings in presentation format. Each presentation will have to answer/ prove the BIG Question.

Step 4: On the day of the presentation you will have to present your findings, as well as talk about the process leading up to the presentation (the good the bad), show yourwebsite to the class and the panel and provide an interview with someone who lived during your decade to give us proof that the elements you state relate to today. The interview may be videoed, in person, or tape recorded. (50 point group grade)

Step 5: You will be signing up for days to present there will be 5 days in order in which they appear. (50’s first and through the 90’s) Total points individually= 50 points with a group grade totaling= 185 points.

  • The group grade will be a grade that is given to each individual, but graded on what the group did as a whole.

RUBRIC for 5090 project

I. MEMO: At least 30 things from your brainstorm.

Group grade: 15 points.

II. INDIVIDUAL WEBSITE: 2 categories with 10 good links for each category that you choose. You will also need 1-2 sentence explanation describing your links.

Individual grade: 20 points.

III. MLA PARAGRAPH: This will be in MLA format, it must be a comparison, EX, EV, EV, style, this will be graded individually for 30 points. The group grade will be the entire paper which will be a 5 paragraph essay with an introduction and a conclusion with well thought out transitions between paragraphs. This group grade will be worth 60 points.

IV. WEBISTE:

You will need 6 of 12 ACE categories with links 10 points.

10 pictures of the past/ 10 pictures of today and a written portion that

shows how each picture can be see today. 30 points.

Introduction to your website. 10 points.
