EXPLORE/CONNECT AND ENGAGE

Begin watching Thanksgiving Day: America Celebrates. Pause the video throughout to review the events students learned about during the past three lessons. Stop the video at 7:30 after the segment entitled "A Pilgrim Voyage" and before the segment entitled "The First Thanksgiving."

EXPLAIN/MODELED & GUIDED PRACTICE

Share with students that once American Indians helped the Pilgrims and they became successful at building their homes, growing crops, hunting, and curing illnesses, they wanted to celebrate. Remind students that the Pilgrims lived in America almost four hundred years ago when there were no stores or modern conveniences. Have students brainstorm ways the Pilgrims and American Indians might have celebrated.

Continue watching Thanksgiving Day: America Celebrates. Watch only the segment entitled "The First Thanksgiving" - 7:30-9:22. Stop the video prior to the segment entitled "The Thanksgiving Holiday." Summarize (with students' help) how American Indians and Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving.

ELABORATE/GUIDE TO INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Lead a discussion about why Thanksgiving is celebrated today in America. Questions you might use to facilitate student thinking could include:

·  Why do we continue to give thanks for something that happened hundreds of years ago?

·  How did the Pilgrims' success in America affect people for years to come?

·  What might have happened if the American Indians did not help the Pilgrims?

·  What would have happened if all of the Pilgrims had died?

·  Why is it important to remember how the American Indians helped the Pilgrims?

·  Why is it important that we give thanks for the good things in our own lives?

·  How can we learn from the past?

ELL Beginner: I (can/cannot) ______give thanks.

ELL Intermediate: I (can/cannot) ______give thanks because ______.

Finish watching the Thanksgiving Day: America Celebrates video. Be sure to pause throughout the video to make connections to students' own Thanksgiving traditions and customs

EXPLAIN/MODELED & GUIDED PRACTICE

Display the Giving Thanks (TCM) book. Discuss the photograph on the front cover. Have the students predict what the story will be about based on the title and photograph. Conduct a choral reading of the story with the students. Talk about the pictures on each page as you finish reading the text. Think aloud as you identify important details in the images.

ELABORATE/GUIDE TO INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Place the students in six groups. Give each group the Giving Thanks (TCM) book. Students look through the books as a small group and re-read the words and pictures. (If students cannot read the text, they can read the pictures to review the concepts in the book.) Prompt students to share details they see in the book.
