Grade 3 PD Paper #1

The Iditarod sled dog race is a famous race that is run every year in Alaska. It is a difficult race for dogs and their mushers because it is run just like the frist race was run in 1925. The dogs have to pull the sled through ice and snow for many days. This means that it is a very dificult race to run because the weather is cold and the trail is not an easy trail. The new race that is run every year is a way for us to remember that thefrist race was run to save the lives of sik children in Nome who needed medicine.

The first race was run in 1925 when (according to the text) medicine was delivered by a group of mushers and thier dogs to save sick children’s lives. The race was run before we had telegraphs or phones. This means that the dogs were the only way the children could get the medicine they needed to save their lives. That was very important. And that is one reason we run the race every year so that we remember how great it was that the dogs and their mushers saved children’s lives.

The race is run every year in alaska just like it was in 1925, except now they are not delivering medicine. The dog teams come from all over the world to race in the Iditarod. That means it is famous all over the world because everyone knows about the race so they can enter. There is a famous award at the end of the race called the red lantern. It stays lit until all of the dogs finish.Since the red lantern award is given to the last team to finish, that means that every team that races is important.

This is why the Iditarod sled dog race is important and famous.
