Nine people have died from suspected rabies in Rumbek, Lakes State.

Public Health authorities say the nine died after being bitten by stray dogs and up to 40 others are receiving treatment.

Rumbek town inspector of health, Makur Ater Akony is appealing to the State and humanitarian agencies to provide drugs to treat the patients.

Akony says there has been an increase in the number of stray dogs in the town, over the past few months.

“There are a problem facing public that people are suffering from Dog’s bite, dogs have attacked many people and this is a report, forty people have reported to police and the Hospital and nine have died and still there are people who have not reported and their number is not known and those people have raise their complaint to public health office and ministry of Health asking why you don’t kill the dogs because dogs are biting many people.”

Makur says the presence of cattle camps around the town is partly to blame for the dog influx.

He says the animals are attracted to the meat in the butcheries and slaughter houses.

“When you go to slaughtering side in the morning, you get more than five hundred dogs in that place alone, out of butcheries places, so this is the problem here in the town, if person is having dog, it is party of your security, please take care of it, and take it to those of veterinary for vaccination, dogs are being vaccinated freely, you do not pay money .do not allow your dogs to roam anyhowly because its can bite people and eat somebody properties, all these are crimes”.

More than 20 people have been killed and a number of women and children kidnapped in latest clashes in Renk County, Upper Nile State.

The weekend attack targeted al-Dabba village in Majak Boma, Jalahak Payam.

Renk Commissioner Lual Deng Chol says the dead include the Speaker of Renk Legislative Council, Wieu Ayii Kak, the Deputy paramount and other local leaders.

“The incident which took place at Majak at Dabba is very unfortunate and we consider it’s a massacre because the area is small and there is not even one policeman there. The rebels took the citizens, elderly, women and children, by surprise. They displaced others. Among those killed is engineer Wieu Ayii, the Speaker of Renk Legislative Council, and uncle Ayuel al-Awad who is a prominent leader in the area and he was former manager of Ivory Bank, and also Deputy Mayor Choli Deng; they also include graduates and employees; even teenagers were kidnaped and taken to unknown areas; young girls and students in Renk.”

SPLA Spokesperson Colonel Philip Aguer says there was more fighting at Goz-fami area northeast of Renk town.

“the number of those killed in the ranks of Riek Machar’s forces reached 168, and the commander of the attack is called Fuok Koang escaped to the camp of the Sudanese Forces at Joda-Sudania, 3 from Riek’s soldiers were arrested. And the confirmed truth is that Riek Machar’s forces have been armed in Sudanese territories in White Nile and Sinnar and crossed the borders to attack the SPLA; those forces carried Sudanese flags and they planned to take Renk and raise the old Sudanese flag”

The spokesperson of the opposition military wing, Brig Lul Ruai Koang denies their forces carried out the attacks.

In a related development, the chairman of Upper Nile Chiefs’ Council, Agol Ayuel Aduai, urged for the respect of women and children lives.

Aduai made the comment following the kidnap of women and children from the Al-Dabba area.

He also urged the Upper Nile State government to organize a peace conference for the chiefs:

Meanwhile the speaker of the national legislative assembly and the chair of speakers’ forum; Manaseh Magok Rundial explains the role of the legislature.

The Equatoria Youth Union is urging for humanitarian assistance for the thousands of people who fled their homes in Uganda’s Moyo district, following border violence between the neighboring Kuku and Madi communities.

Addressing a press conference in Juba, the President of the Equatoria Youth Union, Daniel Abocha Ali called on both countries to find a peaceful resolution to the border dispute.

Ali says the displaced communities in Kajo-Keji are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Up to 2,000 people are believed to have fled their homes in Moyo during last week’s violence.

Meanwhile, the Relief and Rehabilitation commission has sent a delegation to assess the living conditions of the people displaced by the border tensions.

The Chairperson of the commission, Kueth Kang Deng says the team will also distribute more than 500 bags of rice that were donated by the Chinese government.

“We have sent already five hundred of Rice and also we have delegation from the Agencies and International Organizations are on their way to Kajo-Keji”.

The Chairperson was speaking at the launch of the distribution of more than 3,000 metric tons of rice to IDPs across the country.

The rice, donated by the Chinese government will be distributed to displaced communities in Mahad and Gumbo in Juba.

Commission Chairperson, Kueth Kang Deng says consignments will also be sent to IDPs in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile States.

“Infact we are going to distribute in more than seven Camps here inside Juba town as well as we will also we will transport some of this rice to Bor,almost five thousand bags,and five thousand bags to Benteu and five thousand Malakal,nine hundred to Pibor and seven Hundred Pochala”.

Authorities at the DDR commission in Western Bahr el Ghazal state say the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration program is bearing fruit.

Aleer John, the DDR Information Director in Wau says ex-combatants have shown success in carpentry, welding and farming.

Aleer says some former combatants have already been absorbed into state institutions.

In regional news, the International Committee of the Red Cross says it is to resume its work in Sudan after authorities lifted a suspension of its activities.

Khartoum imposed the suspension in February, saying the aid organization was not complying with national laws.

Jean-Christophe Sandoz, head of the ICRC delegation in Sudan, says it is a "priority is to have staff back on the ground as quickly as possible."

He says the ICRC will start by assessments of needs in Sudan's conflict areas, because the humanitarian situation has changed since February.

The Red Cross had over 700 staff in Sudan, locals and expatriates.

In sports, Yambio County volleyball team have been crowned champs of the Yambio Peace tournament after beating the UNMISS side by 3 sets to nothing.

The match played on Monday evening at the Yambio freedom square, was part of events to commemorate last Sunday’s International Day of Peace.

Yambio County walked away with a trophy, to crown their victory.

In Torit, Eastern Equatoria, Rabita and Malekeia ended their match in a 3 all draw at freedom square.
