$2.8 Million Grants Awarded Statewide for Crime Fighting and Prevention

Funds Made Available From Federal Government through Byrne Justice Assistance Grants

Governor Martin O’Malley today announced that $2,832,601 has been awarded to 50 organizations and agencies in 18 counties and Baltimore City to support public safety activities in the state. The grants come through the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention (GOCCP) using Byrne Justice Assistance Grants (BJAG) from the U.S. Department of Justice.

BJAGs are the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. The program provides critical funding needed to support a range of program areas including law enforcement, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, corrections and community corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, crime victim and witness initiatives, and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs.

Maryland agencies are using the funds for a broad variety of ways to increase public safety. These include programs for enhanced technology for law enforcement, services for victims of domestic violence, and initiatives to remove violent offenders from the streets.

“Even in tough times, we’ve protected our investments in public safety and maintained our commitment to creating a safer Maryland,” said Governor O’Malley. “Thanks to the courageous men and women of our law enforcement agencies as well as the courageous neighbors who are working with their public safety partners, together, we’ve driven violent crime, property crime and total crime to historically low rates. With these funds, we will be able to continue to drive crime down in our State and keep our neighborhoods and communities safe for our children and families.”

“I’ve heard from state and local police from all over Maryland and around the country that the lack of funding means fewer cops on our streets fighting gangs, drugs, and child predators and fewer prosecutions of criminals,” said Senator Barbara Mikulski, Chairwoman of the Senate Commerce, Justice and Science (CJS) Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds the Department of Justice. “These tough economic times have worsened the situation, forcing our state and local law enforcement to do more with less. That’s why I continue fighting so hard to put this funding in the federal checkbook. I am committed to giving law enforcement the tools they need to clean up the streets, protect our families, and fight the crime that is destroying communities.”

“Our brave law enforcement officials work around the clock to protect us, and they deserve all of the tools and resources they need to do their jobs effectively,” said Senator Benjamin Cardin. “This federal-state partnership will give Maryland families peace of mind that their communities are safer and more secure.”

BJAG funds advance the concept of security integration across Maryland by increasing collaboration and information-sharing among public safety agencies and service providers, leading to more efficent and more effective delivery of services.
