Work experience in the Costume Department ~ 2017

A work experience placement at Glyndebourne gives you an invaluable opportunity to see a professional, internationally renowned Opera company at work.

You will be placed in the production workroom with skilled cutters, tailors and costume makers. You will see how costumes are stored and maintained during the Festival and Touring seasons, and how production information is recorded for future revivals.

It is preferred that you are a second or third year student on a degree or diploma course which centres on costume construction and/or tailoring as this is of most benefit to both parties. You should have above average sewing skills and a sound basic knowledge of period and modern clothing construction and terminology.

A placement will last for two weeks and will be unpaid. Working hours are Monday–Friday, 9.00am to 6.00pm with 1 hour for lunch. Placements will be conducted in the periods detailed below.

Successful applicants will be responsible for their own travel and personal expenses. Glyndebourne runs a free minibus service to/from Lewes and we can supply a list of local accommodation on request.

Applications should be returned to Pauline Lecrass, Head of Costume, as soon as possible either by post or email to

Spaces are extremely limited and owing to Glyndebourne’s heavy production schedule it is not always possible to offer all applicants a placement. If you are successful you will be placed in one two-week slot. Please indicate your preferred period(s) below (tick all that apply):
