Valley Metro Celebrates Station Installation along Central Mesa Light Rail Extension
MESA, AZ – On Monday, March 23, Valley Metro will commemoratethe fourth milestone ofthe Central Mesa Light Rail Extension at a special event. With construction set to wrap up later thisfall, the three-mile project is taking on an updated look with new paving, traffic signals and stations. The community event will celebrate construction progress and the installation of eye-catching stations and stationart, which reflects Mesa’s rich culture and history.
“The station artwork is unique, innovative and most importantly, conveys a sense of history, time and space of the area surrounding each new station,” said Mesa Vice Mayor and Valley Metro Rail Board Chair Dennis Kavanaugh.
The Central Mesa Extension will expand light rail eastbound 3.1 miles on Main Street from Sycamore Street to Mesa Drive. It is on schedule to open this fall.
“It’s another major project milestoneaccomplishedas construction nears itsfinal stages,” said Steve Banta, Valley Metro CEO. “Soon, the extension will serve the region’s growing demand for transit services withthousands of daily riders arriving at interesting, new destinations in central Mesa.”

About Valley Metro: Valley Metro provides eco-friendly public transit options to residents of greater Phoenix and Maricopa County including the planning and operations of a regional bus system and the development and operations of light rail. In Fiscal Year2014, total ridership for the system was 72 million passengers. The first 20 miles of light rail opened December 2008.
