THE INSTITUTION

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees. It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,200. The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is close to HK$5.5 billion (US$705 million) per year.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of English is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities. With ‘Linguistic Excellence in Professional Contexts’ as our mission, the Department of English strives for excellence in the teaching and study of English in professional contexts. Through introducing up-to-date knowledge and state-of-the-art research skills, we provide a facilitative environment in which language learning and applied language studies can be effectively discussed, reflected upon and applied. Our academics have a wide range of research interests in five broad areas: (i) Applied Linguistics, (ii) English Language Studies, (iii) Language Studies in Professional Contexts, (iv) Sociolinguistics and (v) Systemic Functional Linguistics. Much of the Department’s research is conducted under the auspices of our three internationally-oriented research centres: the Research Centre for Professional Communication in English, the PolyU-Tsinghua U Centre for Language Sciences and the International Research Centre for Communication in Healthcare. The Department offers Bachelor’s degrees in English Studies for the Professions and English for Business and Professional Communication, and Master’s degrees in English for the Professions, English Language Teaching, English Language Studies and English Language Arts.
