The program directors of the three South Carolina orthopedic residency programs, in an effort to promote the training of SC orthopedic residents and to support the orthopedic residency at Hospital UniversityDe la Paix (HUP) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, agree to the following:
- Each SC program will send one staff member and one resident to Haiti twice a year for 8 days so that there will be a team traveling to Haiti every other month. The team will arrive Saturday around noon, be picked up at the airport and go to Hospital De la Paix, presenting lectures, making rounds and if appropriate, operating with the staff at HUP. Sunday they will travel to Hospital Lumiere (HL) in Bonne Fin with two of the residents from HUP. At HL, they will operate, hold clinic, make rounds, and teach the HL staff. They will return to Port the following Saturday and fly home.
- Each SC program will host two residents from HUP for two weeks of participation in conferences, as well as observation on rounds and in surgery each year.
- Each HUP resident will receive a letter recognizing their participation from each program that they work with.
The budget for this proposal will be funded by SCOA, private contributions, and South Carolina participants:
- Trip for two to Haiti and the four to Hospital Lumiere:

- The expense for the two visiting HDLP residents:

The SC residency programs will recruit a program coordinator who will help with scheduling, communications, and accompany first time visiting groups when possible. (Lindsey Demos, physical therapist in Charleston, and wife of Dr. Harry Demos has expressed interest in doing this and she has made several trips to Hospital Lumiere.) Dr. Robert Belding will accompany the group when needed.
The residency director at HDLP agrees to coordinate with the SC residency directors in regard tothe timing of the visits, and will assist with providing transportation in Port–au-Prince. In addition, The HDLP program will provide the facility, translation, and equipment for the lectures at their hospital. The residents from HDLP will be selected so that at least one of the residents will be an English speaker who can translate for the non-English speaker.
This program would begin in January2015, and can be terminated by any of the participating programs that do not feel the program provides a good experience for the residents involved.
