Global Education Committee
Meeting Minutes – March 12 – 201
Attending: Gigi Derballa, Kelly McEnany, Peggy Bulla, Cris Harshman, Mitchell Sorin, Lisa Evans, Kate Bove, Melanie Parham, Valerie Watts, Marilee Bush, Page McCormick, and Jennifer Hill
Study Abroad Update
- Ecuador – Kate Bove will be taking 12 students to Ecuador this summer
- Honduras – there will be 8 students going on this Service-Learning trip with Marilee Bush and Michael Harney
- Unfortunately, the Scotland and London/Ireland trip did not have enough students signed up by the cut-off deadline
- Next year, we will begin the planning in summer for trips happening the following summer and begin marketing the trips to students when they arrive in August so they can begin planning.
CCID
- Kelly, Shelley White, Melanie and Kate went to Atlanta for this conference. They learned a lot from the networking opportunities and sessions.
Consortium for Study Abroad Trips
- There will be a consortium of community colleges interested in study abroad on Friday, May 3 at CPCC. Colleges such as Stanley CC, Davidson CC, CPCC, A-B Tech, and possibly Haywood CC will meet to discuss trips and coordinate support as a system working together to get as many students abroad as possible.
Global Learners Consortium Update
- This small consortium as part of the NCCCS Western Region was on March 8 at Western Piedmont CC. Gigi Derballa, David Dry, and Kelly McEnany attended the ½ day program. David Dry (history instructor) and Kelly presented a session on “Using Wikis in the Classroom.”
Asheville Sister Cities Update
- Valladolid report – Kelly talked in more detail about working with Sister Cities for one or two week internships with home stays in Mexico. Kate Bove is on that subcommittee and they will work together to devise a proposal to bring to Melissa Quinley and Dr Dunn.
Global Distinction (for AA degree seekers)
Howard CC in Maryland and Ivy Tech in Indiana are leading the way to recognizing studies with a global focus. The courses designated to be a part of this (might be 5-7 classes) would include material that would help students gain global skills to be more competitive in today’s market. When World View’s Neil Bolick visits next month, he will discuss this with the committee.
International Student Group Resurrection?
- The committee talked about the possibility of resurrecting a student group that existed 8-10 years ago, perhaps in a slightly different format. Maybe we could call it Multicultural Society or Global Society, and instead of it being a student club, it could be a “society.” It could be a social gathering that focuses on learning about different cultures.
Miscellaneous
- Mitchell Sorin said he has a student whose father is President of the American College in Afghanistan, and we might be able to Skype with students from there on Earth Day (or before). That could be a great exchange for students to see what others are doing in terms of sustainability and use technology to connect across the globe.
- Kelly mentioned that our focus for this year has been pathways and partnerships and tapping into what’s already available for our school to be more globally focused. She’ll present our activities for this year at the ELT meeting at the end of April.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, April 9 from 3-4 in Holly 120
- Neil Bolick will be our guest at the last meeting of the year. Also, Neil will be co-hosting a PD session with Kelly on April 10 from 10-11am. The topic is “Infusing Global Content.”
