CRITERION 2 &3: REASONING PROCESSES PRACTICAL PERFORMANCE

JOURNAL AND EVALUATION DUE:

Many kinds of toys are available in shops today. Some are cheap, and children can play with them for a long time and not become bored. Some are very expensive, yet leave very little for children to do and so tire of them easily. Soft toys can be enjoyed by children of all ages and are relatively easy to make if you have some suitable material, a good pattern and some sewing skills.

Your design brief:

1.You are to make a soft toy suitable for a pre-school child.

The design must:

*  be physically safe for this age

*  be strong and durable

*  encourage the use of imagination

*  use a range of basic sewing skills (eg seams, neatening)

*  include some hand stitching eg embroidery

2. Complete a process journal that uses the design process described.

ADDITIONAL CONSTRAINTS

1. Time: 6 Weeks - will be completed in class and own time.

2. Cost: Minimal – fabrics and filling supplied by school and any extra notions/fabric the school does not have

3. Resources: The school also has a range of plain cotton/polycotton fabrics you can incorporate into your design. You may even like to combine several recycled fabrics in your design.

GUIDELINES FOR PROCESS JOURNAL AND ESSAY.

You are required to produce a process journal of your design journey using the design model of investigate, ideate, produce and evaluate. Your process journal should show all your decision making and planning, possible ideas, reflections and evaluations

This journal is an important part of your assessment. Use the following information to complete your journal.

Steps to complete the task:

1.  State your design brief.

2.  Ideate: Sketch 2 possible designs/ ideas for your task. Comment on:

* suitability for a pre-school child and how it would suit imaginative play

* skills involved – does it have at least a range of basic sewing skills. List those skills!

* whether you can make it with the resources you have available.

* time it would take – can you complete it in six weeks.

* provide a ‘time log” to record your daily activities. For Example:

Date / Tasks completed

3. Justification: select the most suitable design and give reasons why it is the best design for this task. Your reasons should relate to the four factors above.

4. Produce:

Make a list of resources needed to complete the selected design. This could be done as a table containing a column for school resources and a column for you to provide or purchase.

Have a plan/ pattern. You will need to have measurements and figure out how to sew it all together. Document this in your journal either in note or sketch format. Do not cut your cloth item until you have checked your ideas with your teacher.

Make and Present the soft toy and write your evaluation as you go.

Photograph your toy and present it with your journal.

5. Evaluate:

This will happen through the investigate, ideate and produce stages of your task. The final evaluation will be at the end of the task and may include the following

Ø How suitable was the design to the fabric?

Ø Was time used effectively? / was the plan effective?

Ø  Did the end product satisfy the requirements of the task?

Ø  Comment on the quality of the item – which skills were of highest/ lowest quality

Ø  Other people’s opinions

Ø  How successful were you?

Ø  Make recommendations to improve your future performances in practical tasks

6. Submit your process journal including evaluation/ recommendations and article for assessment before or on the due data.
