Langley Saxons

Girls’ Basketball

Rules and Expectations

2016-2017

Commitment:

November through February/March is basketball season. Langley basketball will take precedence over all other extracurricular activities (school sponsored, club teams, travel teams, etc.). Please note that academics are not considered an extracurricular activity. All practices and games will be mandatory – this includes Saturday practices, practices on school holidays, and holiday tournaments (varsity only).

If a player has an unexcused absence from a practice they will not be eligible to play in the first half of the next scrimmage/game.

If a player shows up late to practice the entire team will undertake extra cardio.

Academics:

All players are STUDENT athletes. It is extremely important that all players have good time management. Players need to make sure that they are planning ahead, and scheduling enough time to complete all assignments and to study for all exams. During the season, coaches will periodically collect academic progress reports. Players will be expected to return completed progress reports on the date determined by their coach.

Acceptable Behavior:

As members of the Langley Girls’ Basketball Program you are a direct reflection of not only your school and community, but of your coaches and teammates as well. We expect that you make responsible choices; don’t allow yourself to fall into compromising situations. Any player who violates the FCPS Participation Pledge will be subject to its penalties. Additionally, the head coach has the discretion to increase the penalty which may include dismissal from the team.

Sportsmanship

All players are expected to show good sportsmanship to each other and to our opponents. Additionally, players are not to dispute calls with referees. It is the coach’s job to bring bad officiating into question; players should only be focused on playing the game. Disciplinary action will be taken with any player who does not exhibit good sportsmanship.

Hazing:

Definition – Hazing is a term used to describe various ritual and other activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group.

Langley High School has azero tolerance policy for hazing of any kind. Remember, a player cannot consent to hazing (ex. Just because a player agrees to dress up in a ridiculous costume and wear it to school, does not mean it is not abuse or harassment.)

Personal Health:

Managing academic and athletic schedules can be difficult and can cause late nights of studying and school work. It is important not to compromise your health during these times. Through effective time management, players should be able to get the necessary amount of sleep on a regular basis. Also, players will be burning a lot of calories at each practice/game. Players need to ensure they are eating enough and are eating healthy foods. Absolutely no Energy Drinks!

Awards and Lettering:

A player must complete the entire season to be eligible for any post season awards. Any player who quits or is dismissed from the team will not be considered for any awards. To qualify for a varsity letter players must complete the entire season, and must dress for at least three quarters of the varsity games (with the exception of any season ending injuries).

Communication:

Always check the website for schedule updates. If a player changes their email address or phone number it is their responsibility to make sure they inform the coaching staff of the change.

Gear/Spirit Packs:

Each player will be required to purchase practice shorts and a practice jersey. Optional spirit wear will be available for purchase.

Practice Expectations:

Players will be required to wear Langley practice gear to practice each day. Players will be expected to maintain a positive attitude and be supportive of their teammates. Players must arrive to practice on time and be mentally prepared to work hard for the duration of practice.

Game Expectations:

Players will be responsible for ensuring they have the correct uniform (home or away), shoes, and braces required for each game. All players are expected to be full engaged in each game while on the floor and on the bench. Players should not engage with any members of the crowd at any point during the each game. Players are expected to be supportive of one another and to play to the best of their abilities each game.

Core Values:
