Begin with the end in Mind:

When children begin school it is important for them to feel safe. Getting to know the adults in school will help them feel safe in the school environment. Getting to know their teacher is easy, but the school secretary, janitor, principal and other teachers is not as easy. So this project will be to help the children get to know some of those other adults in school.

The Assesment

Beginning of Project:

We will begin the project with a walking tour of the school. We will see the different adults in the school. When we get back to the room we will discuss the need to get to know them better and I will present the project.

We will discuss questions that we could ask to get to know someone better. We will put the questions on tape since the children are not able to read the questions when doing the interviews. (The children will need to learn how to run a portable tape player. ) The children will then have the choice to use the tape if they are uncomfortable with remembering the questions.

The children will also need to learn how to use a Flip video camera so they can capture the interview as a video. This video will be shared with the class.

Middle of Project:

The children will choose which person they would like to interview and set up a time to visit them. Armed with tape recorder for the questions and a video camera for the answers they will meet with their chosen adult.

End of Project:

With the children watching I will put the videos together for a presentation for the whole class to see. We might invite other Kindergarten classes to view it, too.
