Tim Keller – Getting Out

Getting Out = From What/ bondage and slavery

-God’s redemption to be released from slavery (this freedom has many layers). God takes us out of bondage. Salvation is release from sin.

-the Israelites were free from slavery physically but they were still slaves in their hearts. They doubt God many times = remembering how slavery was okay; pots of meat to eat in Egypt, etc.

-old masters (sin) come back and beckon to be served. We need to believe in our heart what we believe in our head that we are free from sin by God’s grace. Redemption is about getting out but it is a long journey with many layers. We still live with many untruths whispering in our ears that we have a hard time to tune out. God has set us free yet we still live as slaves to sin.

How do we get out? Crossing over by Grace: The Israelites have faith so they pass through but the Egyptians do not have faith so they can’t. God adopts us into the family; we are immediately part of the family. We do not have to work our way in or audition for God; we are adopted as is, sin and all, into the family. There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. We are saved by grace apart from good works. We are not saved by the quality of our faith. We cannot do anything to merit/earn God’s salvation.

-God has fought the battle for you. Sin and death have been dealt with.

-from death to life

-all cross through the Red Sea, despite varying levels of faith.

-stand still and see that God has fought the battle

How is it possible for us to get out?(Water = chaos/death)

-With a mediator (Moses). Egypt has no mediator = death.

-Jesus is the mediator. God saves them first and then gives them the law.

-Water is important – Genesis the earth is covered with water, God makes order out of chaos; creates land and light. The flood of Noah God; causes chaos on the earth. To not forgive causes chaos. When you turn from God you cause chaos in the world. Egypt’s sin has unleashed chaos; the Red Sea (chaos). Waters of judgement pours down on the Egyptians. Moses was the mediator for the Israelites; Jesus is our mediator.

-The more you meditate on what God has done the more holy you will be. Your faith will be strengthened. Your behavior will be changed when you fill your heart with God. Your life will reflect who/what you follow. Look at Jesus and you will be saved; the blood of Jesus cleanses us from our sin.

Yeshua (Jesus) when translated: Be still and see the salvation of the Lord.
