Read Pages 846-851
1) With Hitler being a known terror in Europe what reasons does the text give for American’s remaining isolated (isolationism) from European affairs? Because of the horrors of World War 1. Meaning the death toll and financial burden(s). Americans were also worried that greedy bankers and arms dealers were the ones that brought America into WW1 and might do the same. Also, this again was overseas and tough to relate with to Americans 4,000 miles away!
The girl-scouts even changed their uniform color to GREEN from the earlier Khaki/Military Color!
2) What does the political poster/cartoon show on
page 848 and how does this relate to the “Destroy This Mad Brute” poster from WW1???
Students answers may vary, but should include that these
are very different representations with similar imagery!
3) Explain “Cash and Carry” and why the United States was beginningto move away from an Isolationist stance in WW2.
America was beginning to see that our former WW1 Allies were in big trouble and it could affect the USA! Cash and Carry allowed the US to sell guns, ammo, and supplies to our allies only if the country involved in the purchase…
Carried the supplies back to their own country and that they paid in cash. This kept the US “technically” neutral, but was a step closer to war and angered some isolationist American’s.
It definitely angered the AXIS POWERS…look how angry they got!

The three countries that formed the Axis of Evil or the AXIS-POWERS were Germany, Japan, and Italy!
