2013-2014

Course Scope

This one-year course provides students with a rigorous study of Euclidean geometry. It incorporates problem solving, reasoning, modeling, and effective communication in the study of transformational geometry, trigonometry, measurement, and probability. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The use of mathematical tools and technology, including calculators and computer software, is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the mathematics credits required for high school graduation.

Course Goals:

  1. To develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice. [CCSS]
  2. To experiment with transformations in the plane, understand congruence in terms of rigid motions;prove geometric theorems, and make geometric constructions. [CCSS: G.CO]
  3. To understand similarity in terms of similarity transformations, prove theorems involving similarity; anddefine trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right triangles.
    [CCSS: G.SRT]
  4. To understand and apply theorems about circles; and find arc lengths and areas of sectors of circles. [CCSS: G.C]
  5. To translate between the geometric description and the equation for a conic section; and use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically.[CCSS: G.GPE]
  6. To explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems; and visualize relationships between two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. [CCSS: G.GMD]
  7. To apply geometric concepts in modeling situations. [CCSS: G.MG]
  8. To understand independence and conditional probability and use them to interpret data; and use the rules of probability to compute probabilities of compound events in a uniform probability model. [CCSS: S.CP]
  9. To use probability to evaluate outcomes of decisions. [CCSS: S.MD]

Course Cadre Grading Rubric

CCSD Regulation 5121, Student Progress: Grading, Section II:

“The Clark County School District reports student achievement for all subjects in secondary schools (grades six through twelve) and computes grade point averages using the following symbols and scale:

AExcellent90-100%4.0

BAbove Average80-89%3.0

CAverage70-79%2.0

DBelow Average60-69%1.0

FFailureBelow 60%0.0”

20% Semester Exam

Retaking a test

A test can be redone if it is below a 70%.

You must have all homework assignments for that unit test turned in before retaking the test

On your own, you must correct all missed problems and show all steps

You will need to come in after school for tutoring before retaking the test.

You then need to come in after school on the day of the retake and redo the test.

The highest grade that you can receive on the retake test is a 75%.

School-wide Initiative for Improving Student Achievement

As part of our school-wide goals, the student will be expected to use two-column notes in class.

Makeup Work:

CCSD Regulation 5113, Attendance Enforcement, Section VII entitled Makeup Work: “Teachers shall provide an opportunity for a student to make up missed work due to any absence, and students shall be held accountable for the work. When a student is absent, however, the educational experiences lost during that absence might be irretrievable because the instruction and interaction in the instructional setting cannot be duplicated through makeup work.

After any absence, a secondary student is required to initiate contact with the teacher(s) to obtain appropriate makeup work within three school days immediately following the absence. Once contact has been made with the teacher(s) specific makeup work must be completed and returned to the teacher(s) within a reasonable length of time, to be determined by the teacher and communicated to the student/parent or legal guardian. The makeup work must be returned to the teacher(s) by the specified due date if it is to be acknowledged. Students shall be allowed a minimum of three (3) days to complete makeup work.”

CITZENSHIP GRADESwill be determined by the following factors: attention, attitude, courtesy, participation, behavior, preparation, punctuality, and effort.

Tardies

CCSD Regulation 5113, Attendance Enforcement, Section I entitled Student Tardiness: “Student tardiness is a serious disruption to the educational process. Tardiness interferes with time to teach and infringes on the educational rights of other students.” Students will be expected to follow the Silverado High School Tardy Policy and Procedures.

TARDY POLICY:

  1. Warning
  2. 10 minute detention
  3. Phone call home and a 20 minute detention
  4. 30 minute detention
  5. Dean’s referral for the 5th and any other tardy

CODE OF HONOR: There is a clear expectation that all students will perform academic tasks with honor and integrity. The learning process requires students to think, process, organize, and create their own ideas. Cheating violates the fundamental learning process and will have a zero tolerance policy. Cheating will result in a grade of zero for that assignment or evaluation.

CHEATING:

Cheating includes, but is not limited to the following:

1. Copying or giving answers on any homework assignment, project, test, quiz, etc.

2. Any talking during a test or quiz.

3. Eyes looking anywhere but your own test or quiz paper.

4. Acquiring any handout, test, quiz, or assignment without teacher permission.

5. Use of any electronic device during a test or quiz.(example: palm pilots, cell phones, headphones, etc)

6. Unauthorized use of notes, book(s), cheat sheets, etc.

7. Plagiarizing, i.e., to steal and use the ideas and writings of another as one’s own.

Consequences for cheating includes, but is not limited to the following:

1. Zero grade on that homework assignment, test, project, quiz, etc., for both participants.

2. Phone call home and contact made with the parent/guardian.

3. Referral to the dean with documentation made in your folder.

4. A “U” in citizenship for the quarter.

Keep in mind that a “U” in citizenship may result in the loss of certain privileges and/or deny participation

in certain activities.

Student Responsibilities:

Be on time—student will be in his/her seat ready to work, with feet on the floor, when the bell rings.

Be prepared—student will hand in HW and any assignments on time. Student must bring supplies everyday.

Be productive—student should always try to do their best and use their time wisely.

Have consideration for others—student will raise his/her hand, no talking out of turn. Student will be respectful of others and their property as well as school property.

Have quality work—student will write neat and legibly (if I cannot read the answer, I cannot correct it).

Language—student will use appropriate language at all times while in school.

School rules—student will abide by school rules and district policies.

NO food or drink—student will not be allowed to eat or drink in the classroom.

Clean up—student will put their trash in the trashcan.

Attendance—it is very important that a student be in class in order to do well. If a student misses school it is his/her responsibility to request assignments missed. If you are absent the day before a test, you will still be responsible for taking the test with the rest of the class. If a longer period of time is needed, it is the responsibility of the student to ask for additional time. If student obtains more than 7 unexcused absences, he/she will have loss of credit for the course.

Teacher Availability:

I will be available for parent conferences before and after school.

I will be available for extra help, before and after school everyday.
