Kernersville Middle School Standard Mode of Dress (SMOD) 2015-2016

SHIRTS AND BLOUSES

The following colors apply to shirts, blouses , turtlenecks, sweatshirts,

crewneck sweaters, vests, and hoodies worn inside the building. Sweaters, sweatshirts,

hoodies, and vests are allowed but these clothing items must be one of the solid colors

shown below and, if removed must have a SMOD shirt underneath. Shirts and blouses

cannot be lower than the wrist unless they are tucked in during the school day. If shirts

and blouses are layered, both garments must meet the SMOD colors.

These must be solid colors:

White Black

Khaki/Tan (not dark brown) Gray

Blue (any shade)

SLACKS, SKIRTS, SHORTS, DRESSES, JUMPERS

The following colors apply to slacks, shorts, Capri pants, skirts, dresses, and jumpers

(please note that cargo slacks and shorts ARE acceptable).

These must be solid colors:

Black Gray

Khaki/Tan (not dark brown) Navy Blue

Slacks, shorts, and Capri slacks must be worn on the waist (no sagging, skin tight or

dragging the floor). Girls may wear leggings under a dress, skirt, shorts, or skort in the SMOD

colors. The dress, skirt, skort and shorts must be fingertip length.

The following clothing items are not allowed:

Form-fitting pants and spandex (yoga pants)

Any logo on a shirt, sweater, light jacket or hoodie that is larger than a standard business

card

Denim or look alike jeans of any type and/or color (SMOD colored jeans are allowed on

Fridays)

Nylon Pants (windbreaker pants included)

Pajama pants

Sweat Pants (cotton blend included)

Low cut blouses

Bedroom slippers

Shear, macramé, or knitted clothing that allows undergarments to be seen

Tops that do not cover undergarment straps

Students may use any color with accessories such as belts, socks, shoes, jewelry, scarves hair

bows, ties, ect.

FRIDAY “SCHOOL SPIRIT DAY”

Students are allowed to wear SMOD colored jeans with a SMOD shirt or Spirit-wear shirt

on Fridays, (still following the dress code rule of no sagging, skin tight or dragging the

floor). Jeans cannot be frayed, ripped or have holes. Students must adhere to the

WS/FCS dress code.

SPIRITWEAR ALLOWED

Students are allowed to wear school/PTSA purchased KMS spirit-wear and other KMS

logo t-shirts. We do not permit local community league shirts and hoodies or college

shirts/hoodies to be worn during the school day unless otherwise notified.

OUTERWEAR

All heavy jackets and coats that are worn to school must be placed inside a locker upon

arrival, and worn again at dismissal. Any lightweight jacket or sweater worn in the

school must be SMOD appropriate.

Students who arrive to school out of SMOD will receive a ticket showing the exact

violation and will be given SMOD clothing item for the day or the option to call home to

have the SMOD item brought to school. If a student accumulates three tickets, the

administration will handle as a Level I violation of the Code of Conduct (policy 5131).

SMOD-FREE DAYS

KMS will occasionally have announced SMOD-Free days. Students will need to

adhere to the WS/FCS dress code.

Temperatures may vary in the building. It is recommended that students leave a SMOD

appropriate sweater, hoodie, or light jacket in their lockers at all times.

Students with SMOD infractions will have an opportunity to call home for a change of clothes,

get appropriate clothing from the SMOD closet, or spend the day in In-School Suspension.
