BALLOON BASICS

In order to begin this course, we must have an understanding of some basic principles of geography. Use your balloon to complete this activity.

Latitude and Longitude

  1. Blow up your balloon and follow the teacher’s instructions. Imagine that the balloon is planet Earth.
  • Draw the Equator (0’ latitude)
  • Draw the Tropic of Cancer (20’ north)
  • Draw the Tropic of Capricorn (20’ south)

Draw lines of latitude around the earth like you see them on your balloon.

TRICK: Think of lines of latitude as a ladder climbing from the southern pole to the northern pole

(ladder-tude).
