Description:

This course focuses on giving students practical experiences with geotechnologies and related skills. Students will engage in image interpretation, desktop mapping, analysis using geographic information systems (GIS), use of the global positioning system (GPS), and data collection and management. Students will conduct field work and explore applications and career opportunities in environmental, economic, and political contexts. Students will use a variety of communication tools and methods to present the results of their investigations.

Prerequisite: Geography of Canada, Grade 9, Academic or Applied

Evaluation:

Ten Packages of Work

· You will be asked to complete ten packages of work which will be evaluated throughout the semester.

· This body of work will count for 70% of your final grade.

· These 10 packages of work will cover each of the following topics:

Topic 1 - Types of Maps

Topic 2 - Orienteering

Topic 3 - GIS

Topic 4 - GPS

Topic 5 - Careers with Geotechnologies

Topic 6 - Urban Planning

Culminating Task

· This is a major assignment which will be due at the end of the course.

· This task will count for 30% of your final mark.

Your final mark will measure your most consistent effort among each of the following categories:

Communication

·  Communication of ideas and information through writing, visual and oral presentations.
·  Use of Language, symbols and visuals. / ·  Knowledge of facts and terms.
·  Understanding of concepts.
·  Understanding of relationships between concepts. / ·  Critical thinking and creative thinking.
·  Inquiry skills (i.e.: generating ideas formulating questions, planning, selecting strategies and resources. / ·  Applications of concepts, skills and procedures in familiar contexts.
·  Transfer of concepts, skills and procedures to new contexts.

Learning Skills Expectations

The following learning skills will be taught and assessed throughout the course and rated on the report card:

These skills will not be included in the final numeric mark unless they are part of the provincial curriculum expectations of the course. However, it is important to remember that the development of these skills is critical to academic achievement and does have a direct bearing on the final mark.

Additional Information

Deadlines: In an Alternative school setting there is some flexibility with deadlines. However, it is important that students communicate with the teacher when they believe they may have difficulty meeting a deadline.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism (copying), including computer theft and misrepresentation of original work, use of translation programs, cheating, theft of evaluation instruments, use of unauthorized aids and false representation of identity is illegal. Submission of plagiarized work will result in a zero on the assignment or test, a letter in your permanent academic record and/or suspension from school.

Alternative School: It is very important that students work well independently and keep up with assigned work. If all 10 units of work and the culminating task are not completed by the end of the course the credit will not be granted.
